Is it considered "good engineering/mixing practice" to be able to use more than one preamp, if the signal processor that we are using, can not push as much of a strong level that we need, to get a strong level to our mixer, when we are only using the signal processors trim?
Or should we only stick to using one preamp? :?

What is your chain?

I would think that most Mic->pre->pre's on a mixer combos would be enough to get a decent signal thorugh the mixer.

I'm not an expert on this at all, but i think that there would not be a problem with adding additional preamps in the chain if it gave you tone/signal/color you wanted, but it shouldn;t really be necessary most of the time to jsut get a usable signal.

Are you shooting for commercial CD loudness?

HI Daav, thanks for replying.

I think your answer pretty much summed it up.

I was using the TC-Helicon Voiceworks, and everytime I would set use the Voiceworks mic pre, I would constantly clip the inputs, so I added a pad, but now the level was -20db too low...so I was thinking would it be ok to use an external make up gain to bring the level back up again on my mixer?

I'm using the AW16G by Yamaha.

how many db is the pad?

You might need a compressor to tame the peaks. There is probably one built in your unit. You don't need another mic pre.

*Where* is the signal clipping? The mic input on the TC itself?
