using Insert i/o's on mixer

Hi Is it possible to use a mixing desks insert i/o's usually used for effects, as another ordinary input, for say guitar or drums?

I believe the insert is after the channels preamp. You would not be able to use a microphone via the insert. I suppose you could send to another mixer and return multiple mics, but I don't believe that is what you are looking for.

only need to use as line inpout from a soundcard or keyboard, would this be OK?
 
Why use the channel insert...why not just plug right into that channel???

I'm not sure what you are looking to do here. Are you trying to squeeze in a keyboard along with the input the channel is already using? The insert works like this: The insert is comprised of a TRS jack with send (usually sleeve) and a return (usually tip). If you plug in a TS cable, it should work as a line in but the send will go to ground. I think.

In other words, the mic being used by the channel will not be heard if you do this.

Hopefully someone with more accurate knowledge of this can explain better. I don't believe you can get two sources into a channel this way. It at least has not worked for me.
 
Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this. I Just want to treat it as a normal input that I can go through into my soundcard and add effect and levels to it within coubase on my PC
 
That should work. Be aware that some amount of latency will be introduced.
 
You would probably be better off using an effect send from board to mix with the original input so your source input is not delayed. Just the effect will be.

BTW, no reason to apologize. Were all learning. :)

I have a mixer with 16 channels but only 10 physical inputs. I am using a multichannel soundcard to output back into 8 of these inputs, and using Guitar and vocals etc (one at a time) with the other two, recording onto cubase vst. My question is how can I make use of the other eight channels. Could I patch the guitar and vocals through to these channels and from there output to soundcard?

Think of the insert as a "loop" on a channel...stuff goes out to a processor and comes back in.

If it's a single jack, then like jimmys69 said...it's TRS, and you will be able to insert, but at the same time you will break the existing signal that's plugged into that channel.
If there are two jacks (rare on channel inserts), one for Send and the other for Receive (sorta' like you find on guitar amp FX loops)...then you could add a signal via the Receive, but it would be combined with the existing signal already on the channel.
 
I'm not quite understanding. What is the model of the mixer? And interface (soundcard)?
 
Its an old digital AW4416 and a terratec sound card wioth break out box
 
I'm not familiar with this but it would seem you could somehow use the ADAT connections somehow.

Someone else will have to take it from here as I am out of info.
