Using Gates on SX

Hey people,

I've got Cubase SX on my computer and know how to use the noise gate to gate a signal, however I was wondering if (and how) it is possible to sidechain another instrument into an existing channel's gate settings. For example, if I gated a drum channel, could I then route a channel containing a pad sound into this same gate so that as the gate opens/closes for the drums it does also for the pad, giving the pad a rhythmic effect. Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

I may be wrong on this, but I'll take a stab. I'm sure if I'm misguided that it won't be long before someone clarifies, corrects, or elaborates.

AFAIK, a sidechain is a feature of a compressor, not a gate in and of itself. (though many compressors also have gates) Whether or not you would be able to do this would depend on whether or not the compressor you have (software or harware) has a sidechain feature or not.

As you know, normally I would never contradict Chris ;), but gates are often controlled with a sidechain. This is sometimes referred to as "keyed gating".

An example of the use of this would be gating a bass track so that it only opens when the kick is struck. That makes the kick and bass come out perfectly synchronized. (Obviously, this would not be appropriate if the bass was playing a lot of fills).

You could use this technique to synchronize other instruments (or vocals) as well.

I should add, I have no idea if you can do this in cubase or not, since I've never even seen cubase. (I'm only here because I'm stalking Chris :D )

I stand corrected.... even if it is by a stalker....;)
