Using EZ drummer, triggered by edrums in Cubase

Right, so I've just bought the following:
Millenium MPS100 edrum
EZ drummer

This has just been added to my normal recording setup of
FP10
Cubase SX

Which works fine for recording audio. After a couple of hours I've managed to get the Edrums and Toontrack solo (stand alone host for EZ drummer) to work, but I can't figure out how to set up Cubase to read the edrums and EZ drummer. I've never used MIDI before, so please could you help!

Also, is it possible to reassign sounds from EZ drummer in Cubase. My normal drum set up is one rack tom and two crash cymbals and the default on the MPS100 is two rack toms and one crash cymbal. While I can amend sounds in the MPS100 brain to my liking, I can't do this in ez drummer. I'm hoping there's some work around in cubase for this (either real time or post recording?)

Any and all help would be great as I'm totally lost at the moment!

assuming you have the kit connected via midi, just add an instrument track > EZDrummer then press record, batter away to your hearts desire, and when you play back it should play thru EZD

Cubase SX

Cubase SX has no instrument track so you must go to devices/vst instruments and then load up ez drummer in the fallowing pop up window.

Then you need to create a midi track and route the output to ez drummer and the input to your FP10 (assuming your midi cables are plugged into that from your e kit).

I'm hoping there's some work around in cubase for this (either real time or post recording?)

No there really isn't one without a lot of hassle. Since your brain should retain these types of settings, just map that extra pad/trigger input on the drum module to the cymbal of your liking. ez drummer should have a midi map available as a pdf as apart of the documentation that came with it.

I use cubase / superior drummer, but i think the usage is the same.

Once installed:

Devices > Vst Instruments > Add EZ Drummer > "Do you want to create a midi track for ez drummer? - yes > Once the track is created - Under midi in the track window choose either All Midi Inputs or Your Midi drums.

In the VST Connections window click the e to edit the EZ Drummer settings > choose whatever drums you want to use > Record.

Once recorded you should be able to change each drum/kit in real time.

there should also be a learn button somewhere in EZ Drummer incase the different pads aren't mapped correctly.

Thanks all, I'm not at my setup at the moment, but just to be clear here's what I do:

Edrums > FP10 (via Midi) > Computer (via firewire)

Open Cubase.

Devices > VST instruments > Add EZ drummer.

It should then ask if I want a MIDI track created. Click Yes. Then in the MIDI track window I need to assign it to All MIDI inputs (I'm guessing this is where it recognises there's E Drums).
Then I can edit EZ drummer in VST connections. Then record and I should be good?

I remember from my messing with it yesterday that there was a choice of IN and OUT which I changed to the FP10. I'm guessing that's something I need to do in order for it to recognise the e drums too?

Thanks again!

I might be wrong, until I get to my mac and look. But i think in should be all midi inputs and out should be - ez drummer.

apart from that, aye that should work.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I've managed to get it playing through cubase (as in it recognises the edrums and ez drummer) but I can't get it to record in real time. It just put all the hits as the first first note right at the beginning of the file. How do I set it up to record in real time?

Just to clarify: You've got the edrums triggering ezdrummer through Cubase, right? And ezdrummer responds when you hit the drum?? That's the hard part and it seems you've got that working. To record, just arm the midi track and press the record button.

reread your last post, not sure what you mean by "put all the hits as the first first note right at the beginning of the file". maybe a screenshot might help.

Also, I believe you should have Midi In set to the FP10 and Midi Out set to EZD. You probably already do if you got it working. And I always select All Midi Channels, too. I think that's okay when working with one or two midi devices. If you start getting more then you need to separate them out by individual channels. But that's another topic for another time.

Here's some photos, first what I've done to get Cubase working as host for EZ drummer and to get the edrums responding.

Things I've changed

And here's my issue. I click record, start bashing away at the drums and all the notes are clustered at the very beginning, as if it hasn't registered any timing, just the hits.

Midi issue

It might be a little hard to tell in that second picture, but hopefully you can see the grey diamonds at the very beginning of the track.

As far as I can remember (I've been doing this for about 3 hours now) that's all I've changed on Cubase to get it going.

Any ideas?

No this is not correct, the midi input on the midi track should be the FP10 since this is where his e kit is plugged in, and the midi out should be set to ez drummer.

There is no learn button in ez drummer.

I'm a little puzzled how that first picture is working for you because you have your midi track set to FP10 as the output. You want to make the out EZ drummer.

It's finally working! Thank you all!

Before I go off and do wonderful things, is there anything I should know about using Midi and audio together when recording? Am I going to have any issues with the final mixdown?

Cool. Glad to hear it's working.

I see a small amount of latency with the recorded midi data. I'm sure there is a tweak I could make to fix it, but I just nudge and/or quantize the midi file.

OK, so me and the band tried to record together and nothing seems to be in time. Is it something to do with this quantize business? I'm completely lost as to why we're in time when we play, but not when we listen back. Please help!!

Check for midi latency. Not sure where the tweak for it is, but gotta be somewhere. I'm sure someone with more knowledge of Cubase will be able to help. As I noted in my previous post, I see a little latency when recording midi data, but it doesn't affect me because I nudge the file to align with the grid. Mind you; I'm recording piano parts from a keyboard, but the concept is the same.
