using external mixers

if you use an external mixer that is capable of automation how do you connect it to your sequencing software (ie. cakewalk, logic audio, etc)?

i mean if it's automated it has to be synched with the sequencer somehow right?

Or does it have to be a special kind of mixer?

(I already posted this in the Cakewalk forum but thought that this forum might be more appropriate. Sorry for the double posts.)

james: not buying anytime soon. no money I'm researching for the meantime.
