Using combo amp as a cab

They are indeed currently soldered at the speakers so I'll think I'll just leave the AC30 as it is.

Fair enough. I think it's a great asset to be handy with a soldering iron, but if you're not keen that's cool.
You've plenty of other options and it does no harm to leave your amps alone.

Of course it means you wont ever be able to pipe the ac30 amp into whatever enclosed cab you make, but you haven't mentioned doing that anyway so I guess it doesn't matter?

Have a browse on youtube. There are stacks of lengthy tutorials and demos.

The AC30 has a speaker output (actually two, one that disables the current speakers and one for extension) so I could probably pick up a cab for it at some point in time and use that in the iso box. It's not really a priority though as I much prefer the Heritage Victory.

I agree being handy with a soldering iron is something I'd like to learn, but I don't want to start with something that is as valuable to me as my amps are :)

Thanks again.

Ah, perfect. May as well go with a prebuilt cab or custom build around a new driver then. Keep those options open. ;)

Thought I should update a little on this. I ended up using a giant fridge/freezer my grandmother had laying around. Treated it with some ISO-blankets. For my needs, it works great. Lower frequencies come through but it is a lot more quiet than without it, and it is for sure quiet enough. I'm still not able to crank the amp though, but I did not expect that either. I get good clean tones and it doesn't sound boxy at all.

Well, a Blue is only 15 watts, so I'm not sure it would be a good idea for a 22w amp..?

Neither am I! And even if it was you never know what MIGHT get plugged into an expensive speaker.

I would suggest a 500mA fuse in the line (might have to experiment with exact rating) shunted by a 15Ohm 10W resistor (all this for a 16R speaker Z, rerate as per for 8R). So, if the speaker gets hammered the fuse pops but the resistor cuts the signal enough to tell you but leaves enough load on the amp to hopefully protect a valve amp. Mind you, if some clot has plugged in a 100W Metal Monster without asking, would YOU worry?!!

Dave.

I don't expect people to break into my apartment to connect monster amps to my speaker :D

Anyway the rest might as well have been in latin, but thanks a lot for your suggestion. I'm fine with what I have now.

yeah .... I posted that response before I saw you had already decided on what to do. Sounds like you've got a good set up.

As for the wattage thing , personally I'd run a 22w amp into a 15 watt speaker in a second .... the odds that you're gonna play anything where you actually get 22 watts out of it aren't much and I never run amps wide open anyway.

LET ME BE CLEAR: I'm NOT suggesting anyone else do it NOR am I saying that a 15 watt speaker can handle 22 watts NOR am I suggesting any other harebrained reaction to what I've said!
:D

I'm just saying that I've run amps with more power than a speaker is rated for a LOT and I've only blown one once.

I had a bass cab rated for 200 watts and I ran an SWR rated at 500 into it playing bass.
I would use it for gigs up to a low-moderate volume because it was so much easier to haul than my big cab.
One night they kept asking me for more and more volume and finally ...... poof .... no sound.

No doubt as to why ...... 500 watts into speakers that could only handle 200.

But here's the kicker ...... I'd used that amp and those speakers for ....... ummm, almost 9 or 10 years and has played a LOT of gigs with it and there was never a problem until I turned it louder than I knew to be safe.
And that's 500 watt amp into 200 watt cab.
