Using AV Receiver and Home Theatre system as monitors??

I have an onkyo txsr608 receiver and a set of Jamo surround sound speakers -

If I used just the two main speakers and the A/V receiver would this make a good monitoring system?

Sure, you could make do with what you've got and even produce some decent music... hell when I first started out I was using the Dell computer speakers that came with my old desktop and got decent result. But this comes at a price. Studio monitors are designed for the purpose of mixing raw music while home theater speakers (or computer speakers) are designed, for the most part, to playback completed music and/or soundtracks to movies. You'll find that when you mix and "finalize" a project and you move it to another system (car, stereo at work, etc...) that it sounds like crap. You'll spend a lot of time mixing down, moving to another system for reference, and remixing.

Like I said it can be done and it can be done well. But it's going to be tedious.
