Using a USB 2.0 for the main audio drive

I was thinking about changing the path for my Sonar folders in my laptop to a USB 2.0 external drive. The external drive is 120 gb USB 2.0 Western Digital hard drive with 8 mb of cache.

So, is there any problems with using an USB 2.0 drive instead of my C: drive?

(Oh, dont tell me...... its the speed of writting to the drive, right?)

thanks!

Hi tcdave,

I think you answered your own question. :-)

Actually, the speed of the connection will make a difference. You can use the USB 2.0 drive for audio, but it will be slower than using an internal hard drive.

So there will be some kind of limit to the number of tracks you'll be able to play/record simultaneously. What's the limit? I can't say. It all depends on your set up and the particular project.

You can go ahead and try it out. If you start having trouble with pops and clicks as your track count increases, you can probably put the blame on the USB 2.0 interface.

Best regards,
Scott

Whoops! I missed that reference to the laptop. Yep, in that case, the external drive will probably give you better performance, because laptop drives are usually quite slow. Although, I haven't purchase a laptop lately, so the internal drives may be faster now.

Dave,

I'm not using this setup, but if you do, make sure to let us know how it works. I'd try it if it works well for you, or others who have tried it before.
