i have a 60W amp that i'd like to use as a preamp for recording (the crate GX-65). before when i tried this i plugged it directly into my mic in port and blew it out. would it be anymore successful plugged into my toneport GX. or would that get blown out as well?

A 60w amp is gonna blow anything except a speaker cab. Line level is something on the order of 1 watt, and a mic signal is even lower. Does your amp have a line-out or headphones jack on it? Use that instead.

Normally, I encourage folks to experiment and see how crazy ideas sound.

In this case, DO NOT DO IT

Well as long as you set up a camcorder so we can watch the show on YouTube....

;-))

well i don't want to if i don't have to. i thought the toneport gx would have had a built in preamp. am i wrong?

does anyone have any alternatives to boosting my signal? my vocal recordings sound too low compared to my guitar recordings on my toneport.

if anyone has experience with recording vocals with the toneport i'd really appreciate advice. right now i just have it set to Basic Vocal Tone

Yes, you're wrong. The Toneport is designed to bring a guitar signal into your computer; a bit of a one-trick pony.

Microphones operate at different voltages. A mic pre-amp is designed to bring the mic-level voltage up to line-level standards, which can then be sent to your computer with a standard audio interface.

If you want to stick with the Line6 guitar software AND move up to recording audio, you might want to sell your GX and move up to the Toneport UX8, which HAS xlr mic inputs...

i'm not specifically attached to toneport less than i am to anything reasonably priced. do you have any particular models in mind? are the toneport ux1, ux2 and ux8 models comparable?
