Using a 1/4" Y mono to stereo adapter to approximate a stereo mic.

I have an adapter (or splitter, I'm not sure of the correct terminology) with two 1/4" female mono jacks and one 1/4" male stereo jack. If I were to plug two similar mics into the mono jacks, and plug the stereo jack into one of the stereo inputs on my TASCAM 414, would this work as a makeshift stereo mic? Has anyone here tried this sort of thing?

I'm not looking for extremely great sound, just something workable.

Thanks.

Why?

Instead: take two similar mics and plug each into an XLR mic input. Pan the recorded tracks left and right to taste when you mix down.

Not only is this easier and more flexible, the way you suggest doesn't really work. The stereo inputs do not, I'm fairly certain, have mic preamps.

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. I guess there wouldn't be any benefit to what I suggested even if it did work.
