I'm in the market for a Mic. According to the extensive amount of reading I've done I've narrowed it down to the at4040 and nt1a. Leaning towards the at4040. I was wondering ur opinion of used mics. I don't really buy used equipment usually but if I can save a hundred bucks to go towards a preamp that'd be cool. I saw one refurb and one at gc for around 200 I just don't know how well they test used equipment. And I don't really trust them because they have ppl more sales oreinted then getting you what u need it seems sometimes. Anyway am I wasting money on a used Mic just to hurt myself in the long run?

Also I currently have a mobilepre I'm using as an interface and I am wondering if its imperative that I have a pre amp to get decent vocals which is all ill be recording. I'm gonna upgrade but I'm wondering how disappointed ill be with the results ill get from the at4040 with.the pre I have. I was thinking of adding a dmp3 to the chain but will the mobile pre just degrade it? Am I better off selling the mobilepre and buying a USB interface that's all in one?

Thanks for ur input.

You'll have to check the microphone yourself at GC ... Am glad I did on several occasions. ;)

Ahh the joys of online shopping. So im assuming you are saying it isnt worth the risk of ordering something used online from gc. The refurb i saw in person the used were online. I cant risk it lol.

Check the returns policy so that at least you can return it if it doesn't work.

Any decent business seller should offer a fair trial period on goods bought online, even if the goods are used. If not, then avoid. Private sales are more tricky.

(I sell vintage ribbon mics, and offer a 14 day sale-or-return policy, plus a warranty, even on 50 year old mics!)

Okay Im convinced. Im gonna order the Focusrite Saffire 6 and the AT4040. I think this would be a worthy investment. No use in buying a nice mic and running it through crap. Thanks everyone.

Got a brand new used at4040 for 172.50 shipped to my door. I say brand new used cuz it came from a pawn shop still in the box with a warranty card and all. Guess someone who just bought it was strapped for cash lol.

Great mic. Great deal. You won't regret it. I've had the 4033 for about 18 years now. I use it on vocals, acoustic, guitar cab, percussion - everything. I love it. Sold off a bunch of my more expensive german drawer ornaments this year past.
