i need to find another mic pre.. one that is good with vocals and that can work well with a Adk A51-TC.

but the budget is tight.. no more than $300 used.
right now i've been looking at ebay and found:

APHEX 107

Behringer T1953

JOE MEEK VC3

Digitech VTP-1(scrached)

Focusrite Penta

Roland MMP-2 (modeling preamp)

Focusrite Trak Master

STUDIO PROJECTS VTB-1($129new)

M-AUDIO DMP3 (199new)

about 50% of the time i'll be track hiphop artist and the other 50% r&b and neosoul artist

The DMP3 is quite a deal for $199 new. You said your budget is tight.....I'd say that is a no brainer. It's two channels too, and that always makes it much more useful than a single channel.

Scratch the Digitech VTP1 off of your list..Too fuzzy{IMHO} for your stated application..As for the others I've never used them so can't comment..However,for about 150.00{used} maybe a Event EMP1 would do ya..Good luck

can anyone say anything about the Roland i can get it around 150. and how about the focusrite penta?
the the Dmp3 the best deal for this mic? it sounds good into my console(tascam m1600) but not as full as i know it can be

C9, if it's just for the pre, then I'd pick either the VTB-1 or try to score a DMP3 at Guitar Center for around $120-they had a sale
over Memorial Day for that much. Had an Aphex 107, and it's O.K.,
be aware it has only XLR "ins" though. On a single channel pre
in this price range, the VTB-1 is my favorite so far.

If you're looking for a voice channel, I was planning to sell the big brother to the VC3, my Joe Meek VC6, pretty soon.
Send a private message if you're interested.

Go over to the "Rack" board on this BBS and do a search and you'll find a preamp shoot-out that you can hear with both the VTB-1 and DMP3 and some others... if I remember correctly the DMP3 was favored over the VTB-1 by most peope there. Also, DOT has a webpage where you can hear a bunch of preamps... I can't find the link right now, just ask the guys over on the "Rack" board https://homerecording.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?forumid=26 and I sure someone there can lead you to it.

i was gonna spend $250+ on one so i think i'll get the VtB-1 and the Dmp3 preamps.. i just want something that will let this mic shine.. its not a cheap mic. i want a nice up front vocal sound with out having to use a lot of eq if any at all..

anyone here ever track with the ADK a51TC?

I got my DMP3 from GC for $119 just last Saturday. It's worth checking out.

No, but a friend of mine has one and like's it a lot.

Also, before you send any money on preamps... go read the "Rack" board on this BBS...... you'll be glad you did.

are you in a rush?

cause i think you can do better than that for $300.

i have seen used grace pres for $350.
i bought an earthworks pre for $300.

and [another plug for this unit] my gaines audio pre is my preferred vocal pre and i got it for less than $100. very rare pre, but they show up occasionally. they sound great for vocals considering the price. just a tad of transformer color, which helps vocals quite a bit. it reminds me of what the meek pres SHOULD sound like.

wait around...

I've seen it -- it's a good thread. I'm wondering what C9 bought and how he likes it.

I'm also wondering if there are any updated opinions on the MMP-2 the past several months.

There's a couple guys here who recommend it, but I haven't seen any comparisons of it as a basic mic pre's to its competition, nor any comments specifically about how the ADC's and compressor sound.

I just bought an MMP-2. For the $129 I figure I'll check it out for myself.
