Use PC for realtime compression?

Does anyone know if I can use my pc with a regular soundcard (line in, mic in) as a compression loop? I use reaper and don't know if I can do something like this in the program. I'd want to use a mixer preamp, and send a line signal to the pc and have it return with effects.

I am recording analog and wanted to put some compression on the vocals before it goes to tape.

I know this uestion may be hammered to death.... but why on earth do you need software compression to tape? Hardware compression I can understand, but software? Undoubtedly you will incr latency as well sedning a signal into a comp and thn back out with a non time based effect.
