usb support for win95

I'm running win 95 ver 4.00.950B on the a the machine I want to use my cd burner with. The board supports usb, I've hooked up the cables, and this version of win supports it, but it's not working. I'm pretty sure I need a download from microsoft, but I'm not sure which one. MS support is lost in the wind - does anyone know what I need?

Did Windows detect the burner automatically? If not, you must go through the "add new hardware" wizard in the control panel. Also, make sure that you have W95 drivers for the burner. You may have to download them from the manufacturer's site.

nah, windows doesn't have to detect the burner - it just has to detect my board's usb capability and get it's ass into gear. Once it takes that first step, the bus will take care of the rest. OSRB was the first win ver to support usb, but not without a hitch, apparently.
 
You need a usb driver....

And it does not install by default on Win95. Sorry, I forget what .ini file it is, but it is on your Win95 disk.

Do a search in the help on 95 find where it is.

Damn, I hadn't even thought of that. I'm going to try it later when I can dig up the disc, but the thing that worries me is an article I came across in teh ms support files that mentioned a certain file that SEEMS to provide the support, but which can only be had via subscription. It was few days ago when I read it, so I can't remember details - I just know I was pissed to think that I had to pay for a file that should be inherent to the os. I'll check the cd.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

That sounds whacked out. I only knew about all this from when I tried to install my new video card, a Diamond Monster Fushion, AGP.

I kept trying to install the driver and it wouldn't. Went to their website, and lo and behold, for some weird reason, for that driver to install properly, I had to have USB support enabled in 95. It gave directions on how to do so.

I beleive the .ini is usbsupp.ini. You would add it from Add/Remove Windows Components. If I recall, the usbsupp.ini file is under Drivers>Other on the disk.

If you have the "B" or "C" disk, look in the folder other\usb and you should find a file called uspsupp.exe or something like that. You will also find a readme file. READ THE README FILE and follow the instructions to the letter.

(I think that the install process is different on "B" than on "C" also, not that it matters)

If you can't find it there you can find it on the net. But not directly from microsoft.
