usb sound card - what's the best one?

Hello,
I record into my laptop which doesn't have a line input. I want to get a better preamp than the ones in my current recording interface, but I can't figure the best way to get the signal from the pre into the laptop. I'm thinking of an iMic or a Soundblaster usb soundcard like the Audigy usb or the soundblaster live. I suppose I could go from the preamp into my recording interface, but I'm thinking the pres in the interface will color the signal and defeat the purpose of getting a new preamp. Any suggestions?
 
I just read somewhere that running a line level input into a recording interface should bypass the preamps in the interface. If so, then I should be able to plug the line output from any preamp into my recording iterface and use my recording interface as an external soundcard (just using the A/D converters). Does this make sense? Anyone know if this would work?
