can I use an USB keyboard, like the M-Audio oxygen keyboard, with the mini mBox?
does PT recognize the keyboard even though it´s not connected through the hardware?

Why don't you just connect it to the hardware?? A single out or a left and a right into two channels of protools and your up and running.

The M-Audio oxygen is just a midi controller; it doesn't actually make any sound itself.

Pro tools should see it fine. I don't have that exact controller, but I do use a M-Audio usb to midi adapter, and it works just fine in Pro Tools.

I've used the axiom 49 via usb and pro tools/reason recognize it right away. Pretty much plug and play, not sure about the oxygen, but I would assume it would be the same.

yeah, you can use it, just install the usb drivers for the keyboard in windows (or osx)
then fire up protools
once its opened, make a new instrument track and put in a virtual instrument (anything that makes a sound will do...

then show instruments (view > mix window (or edit window) > instruments
the top one is for incoming, the bottom one is for outgoing (so you could send the midi info to an external sound module) if you click the top one (it usually says ALL) then you can pick which midi in you want on that chan..

if your keyboard isnt listed on that list then you have to goto Event > midi studio setup
and add a new device, its pretty much straight forward, you give it a name, and tell it what midi chans you want to use

for some more advance stuff (like connecting reason to your protools and controlling it with your midi keyboard) check my blog at jonathansblog.co.uk

you dont really have to connect youre USB keyboard into youre PT hardware..just connect ur usb keyboard into youre computer and then start youre computer to install it.thats it.. u dont have to do anything more..when using ur controller with VST .. the IN should be ur USBMIDIMAN INPUT and then youre output should be any of youre VST's that u are using in ur MIDI or INSTRUMENT TRACK in Protools..

Interesting thread....

So you are attempting to simply use the midi controller to drive something virtual in the computer (or rather in Pro Tools)? Or, do you simnply use the controller to create midi data on a track and use that to drive sounds?

My knowledge of midi is very limited so fill me in, if you have time. I'm a sponge for info...

midi

all midi is is information about the notes you play, it contains the pitch, duration, length, velocity, etc, it doesnt actually contain the sound =)

Thanks,

I have this same problem as the author of the thread, in that I want to sync my usb midi controller to my pro tools 8 daw. I've done what you've said in this message. My usb controller is recognized by pro tools, but the keys on my controller still don't trigger the sounds of the sounds plug in. Thanks for your info. It's been helpful so far and I feel like I'm almost there.

Oh my gosh, nevermind. There was a selector in my digital menu of my controller called midi midi select with two options, "Midi" or "USB", I assume referring to the hardware's out. Once I put it on USB, my keyboard worked through the vacuum plugin. Now let's see if I can get the DAW remote on the midi controller to operate my pro tools. Could be trickier.

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is what you're doing, but for the person using a usb keyboard for pro tools... are you just using the keyboard to input the sounds from the actual keyboard into a track, or are you using it to control the plug ins like xpand! ?

I would like to know if you are able to control the features of the xpand plug in from an actual keyboard.

Yes you can.

If you've not got a keyboard yet, I can highly recommend the Axiom Pro range. They have hypercontrol which automatically maps a lot of plugins and instruments in Pro Tools to the keyboard's encoders.

Awesome thanks a lot man!

What's funny is before I had gotten PT8 and was looking at getting a keyboard to record with and before knowing PT8 had built in MIDI, I was looking at getting that keyboard.
