Not sure if this is the correct forum but here goes. I have a pro-tools set-up with the Mbox2 interface. I was never very happy with the compression offered in the pro-tools software so I'm looking at purchasing a Yamaha mixer that has compression like the yamaha MG82CX.

My question is this, where is the best place for the mixer to go in the setup? Say I'm recording vocals, should I go from mic to mixer, to interface, to computer, or some other route?

Looking for suggestions here

Thanks

If you are just recording vocals (one track), I would completely eliminate the mixer and go mic>Interface>DAW. No need for the mixer then. If you are planning on recording multiple inputs, then you would want the mixer before the interface.

Woops, misread the first part. Since you want to use the compression on your mixer, go mic>mixer>interface>DAW.

However, Why are you unhappy with ProTools Compresors? Which one were you using? Also, have you thought about looking into getting other compression plugs?

maybe check out some new plugins or hell...maybe an outboard compressor.

Well I might not be using the PT compressors correctly, but I see a lot of my peaks chopped off.

And another thing, I used to get good results on analog recorders mixing down. How do use an external compressor using PT in the mix down?

What do you mean by alot of your peaks getting chopped off? A compressor "compresses" the signal. It is going to compress the peaks. That's the primary point of them....

are you using make up gain? aka the output knob. Compressing a sound lowers the db and will effect it's placement in the mix, you need to "make up" the db lost in the process. So if you see that you have 5db of compression turn the output knob 5db to compensate for it.

I think bomb factory is the compressor that comes with protools, can't really remember with all the plugins there are lol, I use that one all the time myself.
