Is there any point to having a USB interface if you have a good sound card? The interface is a Lexicon alpha and the sound card is an M-Audio 7.1 recording card. Thanks

Not sure the quality of that M-Audio card, but I think most say to go with an interface simply because they tend to be higher quality than consumer soundcards. If the card was designed by a company that pretty much solely deals in recording equipment on at least the pro-sumer level, you should be fine.

Otherwise the advantage I see is that USB is an easy addition to the system, and is easily portable to other machines. Plus, you can use em on laptops. And yeah, since they are external, they can grow much larger than a PCI card can, so there is another advantage.

All I can think of at the moment, but I hope that helps.

But no need for both? The interface has XLR's. The card has normal inputs. The interface also comes with Cubase LE and is only $100. The sound card has higher quality recording.

Bumping. As I said, the interface has a mic input and has cubase LE, bit it's 24 bit/ 48 khz whereas the sound card is 24 bit/ 192 khz, but only has normal computer inputs/ outputs. Anyway to configure the signal route from the usb interface to the soundcard for recording since the interface has a mic preamp? Can I get use out of them both or should I send something back? Thanks for any help. I'm just trying to get some songs finished.
