US 1800 issue - MIDI recording OK, but can't record audio

Hi all,

New here to the forums. Have recorded on a PC for years using SONAR, but I've since switched to a Mac (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) and just started using Cubase 7 with a US1800 audio interface.

I have a guitar, mike, and keyboard going into the US1800 which is going to the Mac via USB. If I add a MIDI track in Cubase and record from the keyboard, the MIDI info is successfully being recorded. However, if I add an audio track and play anything from the guitar or talk into the mike after arming the track to record, there is no audio signal at all. The guitar sound is getting through to external speakers coming out of the US1800.

I downloaded the latest Mountain Lion drivers for the interface, v2.1 according to Tascam's site (the drivers haven't been updated on their site in over a year). However, in the control panel for the US1800, there is a message that says (screen shot attached):

"Digital Input Status: no valid signal"

Could this be the issue? If so, does anyone know of a solution? I did a search on Tascam's and Google, but can't find any pertinent info.

I also attached some screenshots from Cubase showing the device has been set up. If there is anything in the screenshots that is wrong, or if there are other settings I should check, I'm all ears!

Thanks for any help...

You likely just don't have anything connected to the Spdif (digital) inputs. Don't worry about it man.

Also sounds like you just need to hit the 'Monitor' button to hear playback. Also, you will see the 'inactive' on the list if you haven't created a bus for a channel yet. Devices>VST connections. Create mono bus for recording mono tracks like a mic or guitar. Then also create a mono track to record to. Cubase defaults at stereo for this for some stupid reason.

And to make things easier, go to: File>Preferences>VST. In the Auto Monitoring drop down menu, select Tapemachine Style. This will automatically change the monitor status when you stop recording.

I am not a MAC guy, so any other settings there are out of my knowledge.

By the way, I am impressed with all of the info you gave here. Good form enn! :)

Post a screenshot of your VST Connections.

This copy paste from another thread I posted in a few times:

You must first select the 1800 in Cubase. Devices>Device Setup...VST Audio System. In the drop down menu at top, select 'US-1800'. While on that page, check the 'Release Driver' box. This will allow the 1800 to play WMP, Youtube, whatever, while Cubase is open.

Now, go to Devices>VST Connections (F4 shortcut). Add a mono input bus. You will need to create a input bus for each input needed from the 1800. For each input bus created, you will left click on the 'Device Port' column (highlighted in yellow), and select the input channel of the 1800 that you wish to use. Leave the default Stereo output bus.

Now, create a track to record to. Project>Add Track>Audio>Mono.

In the 'Inspector' window at the left of the main project window, look for a symbol that looks kinda like this: >] SEE ATTACHMENT

This is where you select the bus you created in VST Connections. You will change this on each track that is using a different input channel on the 1800.

If you don't see the symbol, click on the track name at the top of the Inspector window to pull to the main Inspector screen.

You will need to also toggle the monitor button on the track to hear the input (it looks like a side view of a speaker). Toggle it back off to hear playback.
--to make this toggle automatically; File>Preferences>VST. In the Auto Monitoring drop down menu, select Tapemachine Style.

Let me know if this gets you up and running.
