US-144 MKII... using the digital input for mics

Here's the deal:

1. I need to record 4 mic channels simultaneously.
2. the interface I have is the Tascam US-144 MKII.

So, I'll need to use the digital "coaxial" input for channels 3 & 4.
Meaning, I need something in between the 2 mics an the digital input, like this:

2 mic cables(XLR or regular phone) >>> *some converting device* >>> US-144 MKII digital input (coaxial)

Ok, so my question is, what is this "some converting device" that will let me use the digital input jack to record 2 mic channels?

I'm pretty much a newbie concerning this genre, so please point out a specific product!

Thanks in advance, everyone:)

Simple answer is you need a multichannel preamp or a mixer with preamps that also has a coax digital out. Mics to preamp/mixer to interface.

Their are a ton of preamps/mixers out there from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. What's your budget and we can stear you towards more equipment!

Thanks for your reply!

I'm thinking, cheaper the better for this.
What are my options?

Well, here's 1 example of an animal that would work

Being a digital preamp, it gives you 2 preamp channels (2 mic's) and all kinds of outputs, one of which is s/pdif which is what you are looking for. This type of unit would go for about $250

another one to look at is the Roland MPP2

Has some novel things you might like.

Another option may be to sell the Tascam, and get an interface with 4 preamp channels. There are all kinds of options available for this.
