Hi dudes, I have a Urei 1176LN Limiter that I use all the time and am very happy with. I've been thinking about getting a second one and linking them up in stereo for mixdowns..good or bad idea? Or should I be looking at something totally different say a pair of LA-3A's as I often see them used in stereo.

Phil.

I know the LA2As are used in stereo a lot. I don't know about the 1176. I'm sure you could use them that way. And of course it would never hurt to have two 1176s, if you can afford them.

Unless your 1176 is a reissue, it may be hard to find 2 that sound exactly the same for 2 buss stuff. That may or may not be a problem for you.

Even if your 1176 is a reissue you should make sure they're the same revision...

In my experience, 1176's [or for that matter LA-3A's] don't track all that well in "stereo" [it's actually not 'stereo', it's "linked dual mono"... but that's semantics]. They'll work OK for something like a stereo drum buss inside the context of a mix... but I've never seen two track well enough for me to try on a stereo master buss... but as always... YMMV.

Best of luck with it.

Agreed, I have 2 and they never provide a stable and consistent linked stereo path, certainly not in the context you speak of, Tracking. I will always have a varinace on either channel.
