I'm looking to buy an upright bass soon. Can anyone suggest a good entry level bass that doesn't sound cheap. Also what are the best brands out there? Just incase I find a cheap used one.

I don't really have one. I'm not looking to spend $5000 or anything for a first time bass. I really just want to know which brands aren't worth the money, which are the best bang for the buck, and which are pure crap. But anything under $5000 if you need a number.

I rented an Engelhardt that was fairly solid. You can find them for well under $1500 new. I've read they benefit from better strings, but those are pricy, and I was just renting, so

Not to hijack the thread (hitchhike, maybe), are there any 3/4 scale (or smaller) that are decent?

Almost all the available basses are 3/4, 4/4 is actually pretty rare. 3/4 is big as all get out already; the scale length is 42" (vs. 34" for a typical electric). I think 4/4 has another 2 or 3" of scale length

There are smaller scale basses, 1/2 and 1/4, which are around but mostly in student models.

I'd second the recommendation for an Engelhart. The bass player in my old bluegrass band played one, and it was just fine for starting out. I believe he swapped out the bridge and strings on his, and added a fishman pickup.

If'in you can find a pre-Engelhart Kay, late '69 or before, then you've have what you're looking for. That's the ticket.
