what do folks with uploaded songs do (if anything) to protect their songs from being copied/used? is there a specific format you put it in before uploading? should i even worry about this? i'm not paganini - but am a scorpio...
i do see that using say, window media player you can copy a track from a cd. but you can't actually open it in an editor or anything like that. that's fine.

merci

Any format that can be played, from a computer "player" program, can be "captured" into a .wav format file and then opened in an editor. Any file that can be listened to through a computer, can be captured. Any file that can be heard through a computer speaker is in an audio format that can be captured. If it can be captured, it can be opened in an editor. There's no "protection" that can stop someone from capturing an audio stream and then opening it in an editing program.

That's not quite true. I saw a guy on here that had his stuff set up with a new file system that allowed it to be played 3 times and then you had to buy it.

I don't remember what the deal was called though. I feel like there has to be ways out there though. Take Dave Matthew's Band last CD; I popped it in my CD-Rom to listen to it and put it on my MP3 player. It will only allow this to be done 3 times. I'm sure there is some wise-ass out there that can get by it, but the average person probably can't.

You could look at the bright side though, the thought that you may have recorded something someone would want to steal...thats a start huh?

Upload it at lesser quality to make sure noone wants to use it.

Unfortunately, there is always a way to 'capture' audio on a computer. There are software programmes out there that can capture what is being played on a computer and will save it as a variety formats you wish (Eg. Mp3, Wav etc). The thing is, if someone invents a way of protecting something, someone will invent a way to get around it.. Unfortunate but true.

You can always take precautions if you are becoming a bit more succesfull with your songs, but these usually involve purchasing software to 'encrypt' it if you will..

You do know that once youve created a song on your computer, you have automatically copyrighted your material? It's obviously the very basic method of copyright, but its still copyrighted to 'you'.

If people are just listening to your music, then think of it being a good thing and spreading your music until your big enough to purchase the software and can sell your music.

Hope that helps a little,

Good luck,

Peace

There's pretty much no way around it besides not letting anyone listen. Even if someone can only play it once, as a stream, not even a download, it can be captured. The fact is that the signal is being broadcast at least one time. Even if it were a cd or something that you couldn't burn, you could just play it through your soundcard and record it like you're recording a guitar you're playing. It's not like the song knows it's being recorded, it just knows it's being played.

Hell, I'd be fired up if someone stole my stuff and made money off of it. But I don't see that happening right now. All the stuff I put on my soundclick site, I offer for free download. Unless you're already famous, not letting people hear your music will only be a barrier to your entry into an audience.

thanks for the replies. hmm, did'nt get notified till after that last post.
well this is what i thought. i'll have to check again but the last time i copied a song from a regular music cd - with windows media player - it would'nt open in a playable format within Cooledit. it did open but it was that short loud burst of static (code) - like trying to play a pk file.
so with basic media software (and editor) how Do you get a protected song to open in an editor?

not that i'd want to use it of course. not sure why i'm hung up on this. may be discovering something about myself. no matter how good or bad my music is i don't want anyone to take advantage of it in whatever way.

to, i don't use things like napster and never will...i guess this is what happens when you've got five plants in scorpio.....

merci

copyrighted music wouldn't open in programmes such as Cooledit, pro tools etc. But if you played it via Windows Media Player, there are programmes out there that can record everything that is being signalled through your sound card. Try not to get so hung up about it, Like i said in an earlier post, you have copyright on all your tracks already so dont worry.
