Im going to upgrade my sound card and I already have a mic pre, compressor, eq etc set up prior to hooking up to the computer. I was checking out hooking up with a M-Audio firewire, M-Audio USB box or the M-Audio Quattro box. All I need is XLR, 1/4, Midi input, balanced, unbalanced. To go to the computer which one of these boxes has the best sound? I hear the latency is pretty low on all USB sound cards so the only other thing I am worried about is sound quality (I am upgrading my Audigy Platinum 2, so I want the BEST quality possible in a USB/Firewire box without having to spend the money to buy the 1010, I dont need all the 1010's inputs).

Thanks

I'd go firewire rather than USB...

Firewire Audiophile or Firewire 410 by M-Audio.
I might be wrong but the 410 should carry better converters than the Audiophile...

Terratec is coming out with a nice firewire module, I think it's called Phase 24?

Let me know what you think....

.

for the amount of data streaming isnt the latency the same with usb or firewire? I know firewire is like 40X faster but that doesnt mean the latency will be lower if the data stream isnt that much.

I think the catch with USB is that it partially relies on CPU, while Firewire doesn't.

Dont quote me on this, I've actually been asking around for a similar advice, and the trusted people I've been talking to just went no-no when I said USB.

If you've got bollocks, you could check out the new Emu 1212m or 1820m, the converters on those smoke!

The USB communications protocol relies more on the system's CPU and takes up more bandwidth than the Firewire protocol.

There is no good justfiable reason to use a USB or Firewire device on a desktop. A PCI solution will be cheaper and perform better.

There are a Few justifiable reasons for using Firewire or USB....

For example I'm using a Tascam FW-1884 which is a Firewire unit and gives me 8 channels in, and an automated mixing surface..

That being said, yes PCI is more stable, although I haven't had any problems with my firewire unit, and I would go with firewire over USB.

I have heard that there are issues with the maudio quattro and 410....

How much would it have cost to buy a Delta 1010 and separate control surface? Probably less than the price of the 1884. That was my point.

Got it ..I thought you were just shooting down firewire
