Dear fellow musicians,

I've been playing in a electronic/post-rock band for two years before I decide to take a break from the band and build my home studio. I have a decent Synth, guitar and bass rig. Studiowise, I record into cubase and through a M-audio fasttrack pro audio interface.

I figured out that I need to upgrade the system, mainly to improve the bass tracks and vocal recordings. After some research on mic preamps, I settled my decision on FOCUSRITE ISA220 unit. The bass/vocal signal then goes out of this mono pre rack and into some audio interface. For the audio interface I settled my disicion on a MOTU 828Mk3 rack. I directly connect my stereo synth signal to the motu rack and also use this rack to collect the Bass/Vocal signal from the pre; pre-mix the signals in motu and then capture with the DAW.

Please kindly make suggestion on this setup and share your experience before I regret the purchases.

One concern is for example, since I'll have a decent mono pre and as the synth signal is line signal, then I might not be needing a expensive audio interface?

Other thing I don't understand, what is a better choice than the motu? The Focusrite pre has a A/D conversion. Meaning, mono signal can be captured from the Focusrite pre into cubase without needing a audio interface. I can also connect my synth (Korg M50) to cubase without needing and audio interface and though a USB cord and the M50 VST interface. Then there wont be any need for an audio interface? However, I cant figure how I can monitor my signal then!

As I mentioned before, I am more of a multi instrumentalist than a studio musician and I apologize if these questions are offensively newbie-ish.
Thanks, Salar
