First time poster, sorry if I come off as a complete nub!
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO ACCOMPLISH.... I play katatonia, deftones-ish mellow-melancholy-electro-metal. I am not in a band, will be recording all instruments myself, so don't think I'd need more than one instrument monitored at a time (that's all my MOTU 828 can do). However now that I've got a drum set, I'll need a good amount of pre ins (although since I have a MOTU 896 on the way, I think I have that covered). So now I think I'm just shopping for a computer/software setup.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE NOW..... MOTU 828 (MAY be replaced), MOTU 896 (just bought it (for the 8 pre-ins)), Digital Performer 3 (will be replaced), Mac G3 (dual 433 I believe) (will be replaced). And slightly off topic, JUST picked up: a 10 peice Pearl Export w/ a 13" (joey pearl) snare, 8" 10" 12" 13" 14" 16" and 18" toms and dual 22" kicks, K custom mastersound cymbals, 4 SM57s for snare and toms, an AKGD112 for kick, and 2 AT 4050s for overheads. (all based on suggestions from this site. any thoughts on this setup from you drummers out there?)
WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET or WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SPEND TO GET THERE... I'd like to spend maybe $1,500ish more (but am still looking for like the most bang4thebuck) for a new computer/software/ addtl hardware (if needed).
At this point since I can't find any of my old books or registration codes for DP3, MOTU customer service has made it clear I won't be getting a discount on DP6, and were not very friendly or helpful. So at this point I'm thinking of just buying a quad core PC w/ 4GB of RAM for $600ish from a buddy and spending about $300 more for Cubase 4, as I like what I have heard thus far about it.
I've also considered replacing the 828 w/ something else (any suggestions?) to use via ADAT w/ my 896 for multi-channel monitoring (or would that even work w/ the old school 896?) and selling my old mac, 828, and DP3 software (my old setup) to a friend.
Any thoughts on any of this?
Sorry if my questions are "duh" worthy, but I'm just now "gettin back in the game" and am kind of a noob all over again. ;o)
Thanks again all! This community is awesome and is very helpful!
