Hey ALL

Im currently using my console's pres (TMD4000).
I want to upgrade and I was looking at the VTB-1, then I started thinking that this may not be much of a upgrade. SO I figured I would jump up in price and consider either a Grace 101 or a Presonous MP20. Ive read were the Grace is pretty solid and the MP20 can be pretty good as well depending on which trans (Jensen) are installed.

My current mic list:
sm57
MXL v67g
adk51
for starters.

I would be using this new pre mainly for Vox. Hip Hop and R&B.

If any of you have used these 2 pres, what do you think about them based on my application?

Or if you know of any others that are good along this price range 400-500, point me to them.

Or should I just go ahead and wait a while and jump on a Avalon, Manley or maynbe RNP ( I think ) from Fletcher.

Great River maybe?

Im getting pretty good vox right now, but I would like to get them a little thicker without EQing the hell out of them. I like to use as little EQ on vox as possible.

Im taking all comments and suggestions.

Thanks

Malcolm

Never used the Presonus, but from what I gather it gets pretty mixed reviews. I'm not at all sure that it is in the same league as the RNP (or the others you mention), which can be had for the same money so it might be a better bet.

The Presonus is good and the Grace is good, but they are clean and neutral sounding like your TMD4000 and I don't know how much of an upgrade they are.

A Great River or Vintech Dual 1272 might give you that thicker vocal sound, more attitude. Universal Audio M-160 might be a good choice too for a vocal preamp.

I love my Grace 101 but it's only one channel and it's got this extra realism. Now, a lot of the hip hop and R&B guys like the "Grace" sound. However, the other camp likes the Neve 1073 sound. Then, you're talking $$. Here's something very nice in that school: http://www.auroraaudio.net/aa_html/aa_products_gtq2.html

A reasonable compromise for a home studio is the FMR RNP. It falls in the color spectrum somewhere in between the above.
