Hi, first time posting here. I've got a Tascam 2488 24-track recorder and, while it produces decent results, I'd like to upgrade to something with more editing ability and maybe better sound quality than the Tascam, and I'm considering going computer-based. I've got a dual G5 Power Mac with 4 GB of RAM that I'll be using. I'll need a setup at least six simultaneous inputs. So, what would be good for software (Cubase, Pro Tools, etc?). What's a good interface (PCI, FireWire, etc.)? I want something that is going to sound noticeably better than the Tascam quality-wise if possible. I'll probably buy everything used if possible and budget is around 2 grand tops (hopefully way less) for the software and whatever interface I get. Thanks!!!!

RME, MOTU, Presonus products will be nice. Firewire interfaces are what I would consider and look into deeply. So far, you have a healthy system to start off with.

Thanks for the replies!!! I'm looking into Logic right now... looks pretty nice. I've also heard a lot of good things about Cubase... are they pretty comparable? I'll be doing a lot of plain old rock band-style recording and won't need much MIDI or looping ability, but good effects and editing ability are a must.

I would go for Logic then. Logic has awesome virtual instruments and plugins.
