my cousin was throwing away his old Dell today, and i offered to take it off his hands. well, got home and open it up, stripping it of it's usable parts, and lo and behold.... the infamous SBLive sound card.

so i just installed it on my computer, FINALLY hooked up my Audiobuddy, plugged in the Radio Shack mic, and....

hey. not bad. lol

considering i have been using the radio shack mic DIRECTLY into the "mic in" on my AC97 ONBOARD soundcard,... i think it's quite the improvement.

practically no noise, at least that i could discern.

i can say i'm quite pleased.

lol :D

everyone here gets so wrapped up in gear (sometimes rightly so) but I say hey... if it works... and your happy with your recordings... rock on brother! That card sure didn't cost ya much!

But on a lighter note.... I wouldn't be caught dead with one of those in my rig! LOL :D:D:D

just kiddin
I'm glad its workin for ya

i cant imagine the Soundblaster being much of an upgrade as far as audio over the AC97....comparing apples to apples (audio buddy into line in of SB vs. audio buddy into line in of the AC97), i cant imagine you being able to hear the difference.....

dont knock the man's happinies! if it works for ya then it works!

He was plugging the mic directly into the mic input. Maybe that card doesn't have a line in. I'm sure there is a BIG difference with the external pre.

all AC97 chips ive seen have a line in.....

like i said, apples to apples......i have no doubt that the audio buddy into the SB sounds better than mic in of the AC, but thats apples to prunes.......

Hey, I use a SB Live alongside my M-Audio card. I use it for soundfonts for MIDI, and it rocks for that. It also has a high quality EMU sampler--you can even make your own soundfonts (I haven't tried this yet).

Sure, it's not a great audio card, but IMO it's the best $35 investment you can make if you use MIDI in your arrangements.

I'm a cheap bastard, and I get asio capability out of my SBLive!

I recently upgraded from CMI8738 chip to SBLive!. It's day and night. There's a really big difference. I'm pleased with it. It's not so bad as everyone say. I know that you can't even compare it with some semipro cards, but you can do some recordings and it works good for my needs:-) kX drivers are a must, of course...

I currently use an SB Live Platinum with KX Drivers and I have no gripes about it. In fact if you go here: http://www.daretosing.com/?submission=1&view=145 you can listen to an artist I am currently recording done with the creative card.

I think we should have a special post to put up recorded songs against others. All that I read here is how no one should use the creative cards. Although they may be inferior on paper...I would like to compare with sound. Anyone want to take me on??

Zoki...or anyone else.

Can someone provide me with a link for the kx drivers please? Thank you!

A comparison like that is something you need to experience yourself. We all have different mixing-techniques and equipment (and skill), so the result will vary much. What to do is to record the same sound with the same equipment but with two different cards.

When I got my INCA88 I compared it to my Audigy. There is a difference, and it is noticeable. :) And... it's easy to defend the Live! when you haven't compared it with other cards. I know, I did it too. But I showed me when I did it myself... :D

The KX-project drivers can be found here. :)

I understand what you are saying...but I'm targeting the people that continuously bash the Creative cards. I want to hear what they are producing and recording with their cards. Many people in here lead people to believe that nothing good can come from a Creative card. I just want them to prove that what they do is leaps and bounds better sounding than what I do on my sb live. Otherwise...bashing isn't going to convince me to change anything.

It is rather interesting to note that during the latest few weeks I am witnessing a regular emerge of threads on SB, in which some relatively fresh BBS member defends SB quite agressively.
Are we under SB marketing attack or what?

On the subject: I upgraded from SB to 2496 to 1010 and the difference was VERY noticeable every time.

The same question can be asked of those singing the praises of the Audiophile.

i installed the kx drivers. i'm not very impressed. they didn't seem to change anything really. the noise is still at around -60db, like it was before. eh. oh well.

There is a very high noise floor on the SB Live. It is a huge problem, particularly as multiple tracks that have all been recorded with that noise get layered together...

I would know.

I upgraded to a sound card with a noise floor of around -100db, and the difference is phenominal! Even just listening to CD playback on the CDRom, I hear details I never could before.

The difference is if you listen to a song at a comfortable listening level with headphones, and then stop playback but keep the volume the same, with the SBLive you hear "air." With a soundcard with a better noisefloor you truly hear absolutely nothing. When you listen to recordings you can hear every reverb tail fade completely into silence.
