Right now I use a Realistic PZM mounted on a 7"x7" piece of plexiglass on the end of a boom stand as a mono overhead for drums. Placed above the drummers head pointed at the center of the kit. Works really well at capturing the kit (I also close mic the snare and kick)

Would swapping the PZM with either a Studio Projects B1 or AT2020 be a significant step up in sound quality? I've never used either of these mics so I'm curious. The PZM is omni, so maybe switching would also get a tighter pattern?

Maybe a second PZM panel at an angle to the first in a smashed V shape over the kit perhaps? If you like that PZM sound, that may be your best bet as you already know you like it. The thing that will likely disappoint you in the mics you mentioned is that they are cardioid and they will not have the bass response at a distance like the PZM or other omnis will have. Cardioids are used all the time for overheads, but just know what you are getting into.
