Hello,

Actually I'm just at a point where I need to clear up some lingering problems and poor system function.

Where to start...?

Some weird symptoms are:

1. unprompted connection to the internet
2. Slugish functionality even to a 3min wait for the control
panel and my docs to open.
3. many "program not responding" messages
4. As I write this my internet connection timed out so I clicked
for reconnect and now my password to connect has been
forgotten. Continuous stuff like this!

This is all in spite of having a 1gig processor/ 512Mb Ram and now a second 60gig HD. Admittedly my first drive is 3/4 full.

My first mistake was when this machine was built for me I transferred all the data from another machine's HD.

Now that I have the second HD I'm feeling that I should transfer my necessary files to this new disc and do a "wipe" on my drive C then reinstall my OS and programs.

I should add that I have followed most suggested steps for optimizing my system for audio recording.

What do you think?

I'd appreciate any insight!

Rusty K:(

Sounds like a reinstall of the OS wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hello again,

Good day to you!

Yes but I've never done it myself.

Two questions
1. How do I accomplish a complete "wipe" (if you think it's necessary)?
2. Will the install OSCD walk me through the reinstall process?

Hey I really do appreciate your time. I try my best to pass what I know along to others as well but I still feel like a novice.

Thanks,
Rusty K

Hey RustyK

If your leary of reinstalling the OS yourself, bring it into a local computer store (one with a good reputation, ask around), shouldn't cost you more than $50.

Whether a OS reinstall is necessary, hard to determine.

1. unprompted connection to the internet

If you go to control panal and internet options, and then connections, make sure you checkmark 'never dial a connection'.

2. Slugish functionality even to a 3min wait for the control
panel and my docs to open.

You may have a virus. Lots going round. Download ezantivirus from www.my-etrust.com and run it. You may have Klez to, I've run into this one a lot in the last 3 weeks. Go to symantec.com and download the klez removal tool. It's the only software that symantec makes that is any good :) If your using Norton Virus, uninstall it.

Hello Emeric,

Ok I'll try the two programs you suggested and yes I do have Norton.

Emeric,

I've downloaded the EzAntivirus program. I hit scan on both drives and it's been scanning for over twelve hours. it's still on the first drive C/Temp/. It's scanned about 7000 files . Is this program functioning correctly?

I first uninstalled my Norton software however I did leave my firewall, Zone Alarm Pro, at least for the time being. I've looked over this program since down loading it and it seems to be much more user friendly than Norton. I've got the Klez removal prog. as well but I thought I'd start first with this scan of the system.

Let me know if I'm headed in the right direction in the meantime I'm just gonna let this program run.

No it shouldn't take 12hours unless you have an incredible amount of junk on your machine. You can delete everything in Windows Temp, as well as Temperorary Internet Files and Cookies. This should speed it up a bit but 12hours seems a tad high.

Try the klez removal first, I'm just guessing as to what virus you may have. Another one to try is the FixSir.exe utility, which can also be found at symantec.com. This addresses another virus, W32.sircam.worm which may be slowing your machine down and interfering with ez antivirus.

Emeric,

And the program was nowhere near finishing!

I regularly purge my temp files, cookies etc. but that is exactly how my machine is acting, as if there was an incredible amouth of junk on it.

I'm not sure how many files I actually have but the scanning seemed very slow as it processed.

I'll try the klez....fix.

update

Emeric,

I've used both symantec program fixes. Results....no virus

I discovered a couple of weird settings when trying to use these two virus fixes.

1. The Klez program said I need to disable System Restore. When I got to the right dialog window it was already disabled yet when I started in Safe Mode it detected that System Restore was still enabled....?

2. In the System config. Utility/ general tab Selective Startup was selected instead of Normal. All the options below were also checked. I don't remember making these setting changes. I'm assuming that Normal would be the default settings. I couldn't remember if this was a change I might have made following the instructions for optimizing my system for recording. It just has me a bit confused. I've reselected Normal to see if it make any difference.

I've also scanned now with EzAntivirus. This time it scanned both drives in about 15 min. I don't know what made the difference. The Scan turned up no viruses.

Is a OS re-install looking better and better all the time? Should I "wipe" the HD first if the answer is yes?

Thanks as always,

Rusty K
