Upgrade from at3035 to 4050?

For those who have expirience with the 4050, do you think there would be a big difference if I upgraded from an at3035? What do you think of the mic, worth the money etc? Thanks!!

I've rented one and have been recording vocals with it for a few days now. It is OK. It has a bit of a high-end peak which I find unflattering, but in general it blows my cheapo condensers out of the water. Still, it isn't miraculous.

I have a pair of 4050s which I use regularly for vox and acoustic guitar. They work well in those two applications for me.

I have a pair that are general go-to mics for all kinds of uses. Work well on overheads, as well as vocals. I 'd generally rather use a SDC on acoustic instruments and a good dynamic on cabs, but otherwise they are really great mics. Having multiple patterns is very useful. I've not used a 3035 so I can't compare directly, but I think the 4050 is a bargain if you can pick one up used for less than $300 - which you should be able to do.

You probably will. But a lot will depend on your room. The 4050 has almost a 3d quality to it. In a great sounding room, it will add a nice depth and capture that room. In a mediocre room, it will sound mediocre. (I guess that could be said of any mic, but especially the 4050). But probably still a step up

It's not so much of an upgrade as a whole new universe.

Do it if you can afford it at all.

I bet you get rid of the 3035 seriously, it's nearly useless in my not so humble opinion.

EDIT: Ah, they're refurbs......Still, that really makes absolutely no difference! My job is in retail, and half of what we sell is refurbs, they're the same thing as new, they just aren't allowed to say it.

I've bought all kinds of stuff from 8th street. Never a problem and quick service.

I would buy AT referbs in a heartbeat! They are thoroughly tested - probably more than the new ones, plus their customer service is great.

I once sent them a 4050 that I had bought second hand and *thought* was defective. They couldn’t find the problem, but replaced the entire circuit and returned it in a new factory plastic case, free of charge! I later realized that my preamp was faulty, not the mic, (and coincidentally, it initially only acted up when I used the 4050 - go figure! ) and offered to pay them for their services, but they told me not to worry about it.

So to reiterate, yes, I’d buy referbs in a heartbeat!
