My setup:
Alesis HD24
Motu 2408MK3
(3) Focusrite Octopre's
bunch of assorted vintage mic preamps
Decktop PC
I want to upgrade my converters ( I think)and Im looking at Apogee and/or Prismsound.
My questions are. Will there be a noticable improvement in sound as they say? Where in the food chain do these converters go if Iuse digital focusrite preamps in to digital HD24 then into PC? Im a little lost on this subject.

If you are going lightpipe out of the octo's into the lightpipe of the hd 24 then there is no room for an outside converter. On the other hand you could go analog out of the 25 pin signal from the octo into a nice apogee and then go digital into the hd24. I am a bit confused, are you recording your tracks into the hd 24 or into your computer?

I utilize 2 different setups. One, is 3 octopre's ,lightpiped to HD24, the other is assortment of vintage mic preamps into HD24. In either case once into HD24 I then move them to computer via either Motu2408MK3 or Fireport. I do sometime record straight into computer at times.

I'm thinking the best way would be to use the vintage micpres into a unit like an Apogee a/d converter then into Motu2408MK3 right into converter.Probably would not really be useful for Octopre setup.

I think you mean preamps > Apogee digital outs > 2408 > computer.

There's no need for extra conversion after the Apogee.

Fixed. I think he meant computer, not converter.

well, I should look at an apogee, could I just go micpreamp>apogee>computer?

Yes.

If you buy an ad16x you can get a firewire card. I have an ad16 that came with lightpipe out, so I have a hammerfall card in my pc.

+1 on going directly into the computer. The less gear in the way the better, even if it is digital data passing through.
