Stand Up Comity
I was in Sam Ash last night, and saw a couple of guitar brands I was unfamiliar with, Brownsville and Carlo Robelli.

Any opinions?

crap and crap, i would rather have a squire than either of those

I on the other hand would agree that sad music should only be played on sad guitars.

Ah, Mr. Fly, but it takes an exquisite instrument to allow the performer to bring out the sublime nuances of the pain in his heart.

Unless, of course, he's really good, and then he probably could get the point across on a Squire. Especially if he is privy to the mystical melancholy of the flat third.

I heard a rumour...

That Carlo Robelli was the janitor at the original Sam Ash location in NY..
I also heard if you call Richard Ash and ask he will not deny this..

Carlo Robelli seems like the "house brand" at Sam Ash.

They make a variety of interesting instruments, and the price sure is right!!

Their stuff looks pretty cool, for the most part. It could be "sleeper", killer gear, or it could even be the new Ibanez, -type upstart. I mean like Ibanez, in a positive sense. (Don't even think otherwise).;)

The Carlo Robelli instruments I've seen looked fine, in the catalogs, etc, but I've never owned one. They do seem like a tempting purchase,... w/high-value-low-dollar. That's MO. YMMV.

In the meantime, while I ponder this question and peruse the catalogs, I have a wide variety of Ibanez's and Danelectros at hand, that I'll swear by, as fine quality instruments (that were not expensive).

Sounds like you never played a Carlo GoSmellMe... They suck..

And the Brownsville line is even worse.. I would take a squire bullet over either of these 2 brands...

Yeah, those would be the guitars that parents buy for their kid who wants to learn to play...and then the guitar is so bad that the kid hates it and never plays again.

Carlo GoSmellie!?!?!?!

Haha.

Hey, I have a Squier Bullet, and I LOVE IT. It's set up really nicely, (had to set it up myself, of course), and the price was damn-surely right! $89, baby! Can't beat that! Hard case cost me $70, too. That's irony!

 how dare you compare them to an upstarting ibanez, ibanez had a respectable start as a company who made fake les pauls and strats. :p
anyways my point is... there is no point to my post, just that I love ibanez. yes. thats right.

Heres where i say something meaningful. The difference between Brownsville and Carlo Robelli guitars from other cheaper guitars (low end ibanezs, cheap fenders, etc.) is that those are made to look good more than sound good. even squire puts more into sound than looks than brownsville does. Thats what makes the difference IMO.

i use a fender squire affinity..i think its one up from the bullet...i like the guitar just fine...it gets the job and people like the songs. the brand i dont like is Godin. personally i dont find the guitar shapes attractive

Carlo GoSmellMe?!?!?!?!

aaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

I can read!!

"90% of tone comes from the players fingertips"

One day when I was just noodling on my strat rip off cheapie beginner guitar, this bassist (with a sweet ibanez bass) came up to me and said, "Hey, I really like your guitar". I replied with, "really???" and he said, "It's the player that makes the instrument. Look at me, I've got this sweet bass and I suck!"

Hard2Hear is right. Very Esteban-like. Do you have a spanish accent? If you do your one up on old Esty, that guy's got a voice like trucker(my apologies to any golden-throated, Marvin Gaye soundalikes in the transporting industry). I say forget the guitar, go down the bar and pick up chicks with more touching witticisms about the "nuances of pain" in your heart. And if you don't have the accent, fake it.

Don't get me twisted...

I wasn't trying to diss on the Squire Bullet. I bought one for my nephew and it was a fine first guitar. At least it plays like a real guitar, unlike the Carlo or the Brownsville..

It's like when you first start mountain biking and you go to Toys R Us and buy the first 80lb bike you see. Then one day you have the opportunity to ride a titanium or aluminum REAL mountain bike.. Same goes for guitars...

As for Ibanez, or as I call them IveBeenHad, I have owned a few nice ones and a few sub-standard models. My friend has a nice Artist but the balance on the guitar is the worst I have ever seen. He also bought one of the hollowbody Artcore models, that now site gutted because all manner of PU's sound like ass in the guitar. I have mixed emotions about Ibanez....

My dulcid tones are available for your evaluation in my signature line. I have a standard midwestern USA accent, but I do faux inflections from time to time. I am very happily married. But, I'm not a great guitar player. Got a lesson tonight, though. Maybe it'll be the breakthrough I need...

And this is probably the best $300 starter guitar on the market today. Uber-neck, good pickups, and ebony fingerboard.

Well...

I have never owned a Carvin, but for $299 you can't go wrong w/ that kit...

Squire guitars are made by Samick of Korea, and the only "good ones" are the ones that you find after sifting through a bunch of junky ones. It's not really Samick's fault, it's the tolerances that are set by Squire's parent comnpany (the owners of Fender) who set the minimum acceptable standard.

Carlo Robelli and Brownsville guitars are mostly made in China, probably in the same factory that make OLP guitars. Some models of Carlo Robelli guitars are made in Vietnam, too.

While the quality control of all 3 brands mentioned may not be stellar, now and then a really nice one squeaks through and it's a killer guitar for a super-cheap price.

You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you get to that prince.... so it all depends on how much time and patience you have to find "the right one."
