uneven tone

hello, I need some help, I am trying to record an accoustic guitar with a mic, (cheap mic.)
the sound I am getting is dragging. very uneven.
I have a soundblaster soundcard.
Is there a way I can maybe go through my fostex 4-track(as a mixer) and use a RCA cable to go into my soundcard?
I am very new to this and it seems pretty overwelming.
small steps to start.
please help me.
 
Going Through your Fostex won't help. You must at least get a better mic. Or you can install a pickup on your guitar. I have install a good quality pickup on my guitar with a equalizer. I get a very good sound when I plug my guitar directly in the
sound card.

What kind of cheap mic are you using and where are you placing it?
 
Thanks for your reply WISEPAT, I think i will pull out my wallet
and get a real mic, until then I may borrow a guitar with a pickup on it. I will let you know how it turns out.

thanks for you reply gnarled, my mic is a cheap dixon,(try not to laugh too hard) (lol), I am placing it right in front of my guitar.
Should I go through my mic jack? or is there another way?
 
Try and experiment with placement a little. You might be able to "even" out the sound by putting the mic a few feet away. However, I think a new mic is probably in order. An SM57, small diaphragm condensor or even a decent dynamic omni would probably be a huge improvement. My experience with most acoustic pickups is that they sound alright for an extra track to mix with a miced track to thicken up the sound, but are kinda crappy alone. Although I did get a pretty cool sound the other day with the acoustic plugged in. I used 4 mics: one 57 close miced on the guitar cab, a pair of MXL 603s close to the guitar and a AT4033 room mic. It resulted in really open roomy sound.
 
I moved the mic around a bit, it still sounds like there is a compressor, or a flange.
It seems to be worse at the start,,(first 4 bars or so,) but I can here it all the way through,,even the drums,which I am using the mic direct aswell.
Please help me.

PS.. I am down to 7% disk space ,,does that effect this??

I should tell you I am down to under 300meg
I am getting a 8 gig hard drive, that I plan to use for recording only.
Would this effect my sound at all?
 
Well, I doubt hard disk space could cause the flanging sound you describe. If you were really starved for space and you're drive wasn't defragmented, it might cause dropouts, but probably not much else. Try a different microphone and get back to us.
