Hi,
I have to record an uncommon jazz quintet (voice, guitar (guitarist is the singer), ac. bass, drums, congas and tenor sax). I have a quite big room, with good sound, but I am not sure where where to place congas and upright bass and what mics use to avoid drums bleed.
I have an 8 input w/ 8 pre amps interface, and my mics are:

2 MXL 993
1 MXL 604
1 Bluebird
2 SM 57
2 AT 2021

Any suggestions?
Thank you very much

Daniel

Embrace bleed, it is your friend. Set the musicians where they can see each other. A large space will be good, but you don't have to spread them out too far. Get them as they would be staged, except with better lines of sight to each other. Probably I would set the rhythm section as normal, and make the sax and vox/guit face them about six to ten feet away.

vocal - bluebird
guitar amp - 57
drum OH - 2021
kick - 57
sax - try one of the MXLs. If that doesn't work, swap the MXL pair with the 2021s. If that doesn't work, use the other 57--you can go kickless, or stick a leftover condenser about a foot from the reso head. Whatever you do, get the best mic you have (other than the bb) on sax.
conga - remaining MXL
ac. bass - remaining MXL

If the upright bass has a pick up, you might consider using a
DI as opposed to micing it. It will save you a mic.

But I do realize that the natural sound of an upright mic'd is a thing of beauty!
