unable to record at 24-bit

my system is a p3 1gb, 512ram, 12gb hd, ide drive (not scsi, infortunately). there's nothing else installed or running on it besides, cakewalk, the aardvark manager, and a bunch of plugins. even sound forge and easy cd creator will only be installed when i need to mixdown stuff and burn cds. when i hit crt + alt + del, there are no background activities listed, except for cakewalk, explorer and systray.
i have no problem playing as much as 7-8 tracks simultaneously (haven't tried more than that yet), but when i start adding real-time effects...
as for the dropout, that's exactly it. i can usually continue playback if i right-click the dropout message, and hit play again, but it keeps happening.
i'll try moving the soundcard to another pci slot and see if it works, but only tonight (7-8 hours from now, eek).
on a positive note, i did manage to record some drum tracks on sunday, and they turned out better than i expected, considering it was my first time doing it by myself. i had doubts but now i firmly believe that one can get professional sounding recordings from a simple/inexpensive setup like this. what with all the help and support i'm getting on this forum.
