I went to radioshack and bought a Omnidirectional Dynamic Microphone.
Before i had a Headset mic for conversation which i used to record my own music.
But i wanted to step up. SO i went out and bought this new mic. So i got home and plugged it into my computer and started to test it out. I recorded a bunch of freestyles and they all came back too low or too airy. I test out my headset one andi could hear them just find. I dunno what to do. Too get the right amount of volume i have to press the mic up to my lips. This is really not happening.
Sorry im a noob i dunno much aboutthese kinda thing. =(

Well, Radio Shack mic quality aside, you don't want to use an omni unless you really want to pick up the sound of the room and any noise sources in the room. Try taking it back to trade for a cardioid and see if that works any better for you.

Alright thats cool. But well i made a lil studio out of a shoe box and it canceled out the noise just the recording doesnt pick up sound in or outside the "mini studio"...

which soundcard input are you plugging the mic into

mic in or line in?

what is the impedance of the rs mic?

You should just take that back and drop 50 or 60 bucks on a cheap condensor. I'm not sure you're ever going to be satisfied with a Radio Shack mic.

well maybe he's going for that low fi black metal sound. :p

mini studio... hmmm.. this sounds like a prank.

Huh? What's a shoebox "mini studio"? Just curious.....

I think he puts the mic in the shoebox and sings into it that way. By mini studio I think he means mini vocal booth.

Anyway dude, get rid of that P.O.S. Radio Shack mic, and go get yourself a cheap condenser mic from Guitar Center or Sam Ash or something. You will never be satisfied with a Radio Shack mic. They just aren't intended to be used how yu want to use it.

If his name was ericlingus then I'd say yes he'd be going for a lifi black metal sound. :D

Well, he said he recorded a couple of freestyles. I think it's rap.

I am having a hard time not laughing at the thought of a grown human singing into a shoe box with a mic wrapped around it. :D :D :D

Oh yeah sorry haha i dont go on here often. But yeah i returned the radioshack mic and im waiting till saturday to go to a music shop and look for mic there. Im prolly gonna dish out $50-80 for a mic. Cuz the radioshack one was like $30.
And yeah the show box is my "ghetto" way of recording. I have padding in it to cancle out the noise and the lid has a cut out in it and a filter in front of it. SO like basically im too poor and cheap to make a large studio i just try and downsized it....-_-

Microphones (63 Viewing)
Which mic should I buy, why can't I buy it at Radio Shack, and which way do I point it?

Omnidirectional Dynamic? I'll be dammed if I knew there was such a thing...

If you get some kind of condensator mic, you will need a preamp with phantom power. Just get a dynamic like a Shure 58, or whatever there is cheaper that is similar.

Hey man, the number one rule of recording is, if it sounds good it is good. If singing into a shoebox takes care of some room problems and lets you get a better sound, more power to ya!

Uhhhh....

Yeah, I think this is a prank, too.

It reminds me of that post a while back where some guy asked for the best pre-amp for under $50....

This can't be real.

The EV 635a is a pretty famous omni dynamic. Watch any kind of news conference and you'll see at least one being used...

I think bottom line the original poster needs to get a preamp of some sort. My hunch is that the mic is plugged straight into the computer's sound card, and thusly is not producing an adequate signal level. Try something cheap from m-audio or the like (one of those ~$100 dealios).
