Why cant someone make a reasonably priced, say under $400 interface with 8 XLR ins all with phantom power and 2 line level inputs. I mean this would be the ultimate interface for recording drums to vocals. No need for mixers or preamps.....
 
The reason i want all in one is because of portability issues. Because im not only recording myself but other bands as well, im trying to keep the amount of equipment down to a minimun. Eventually ide like to be able to record a full 5 piece band with just the laptop, interface, and mics. Now thats portabal.
 
I think you'd be better off with a portable DAW then a laptop system and you would have everything in one box. The next best system would be a 24track HDR and a small mackie or Soundcraft mixer. You could put everything in one slant top rack and have it all wired and ready to go.

It wouldn't be $400 but that doesn't buy you much these days.
 
Just because the soundcard would have XLR ins doesn't mean you wouldn't need a mixer or preamp. You'll always need a preamp of some kind.
