what is udma and what does it do???????
Why does my hard drive sometimes soud like it,s full of pebbles even after a re format??
Why do mac users always payout on pc users

UDMA is basically the same as DMA. The U stands for Ultra. Another name for DMA is bus mastering if that helps. It's a way your BIOS system is set up to read the memory (Direct Memory Access). Different drivers will allow your devices to utilize dma for faster processing.

Hard drives make various levels of sound. I've haven't had one that seems as bad as the one you describe, but they are basically "thinking" when making these sounds.

I use both Mac and PC, so I'm probably an enigma.;)

Hope this helps.

In my boot up the pc says dma mode is ddma mode .I have the dma box checked in the driver settings can I speed things up even more without scuzzy etc. I have pentIII 550mhz,13g hard drive-ide ,5400 rpm,128 ram.what about virtual memory etc ,can I change these settings. on the logic web site they say the standard 5400rpm ide drive should be fine for using logic if the sysem is properly configured!!

Peter,

Try out a 7200 rpm drive, the ones from Quantum/ugh(Maxtor) are pretty good. IBM's are nice as well. The RPM's make way more diff than the DMA check box. By 4500, i assume you mean 5400, there were 4400's but awhile ago, and short lived. Go 7200. And... to ramble on. If you can, use a dedicated drive for only audio files. A 550 should be plenty fast, if used within reasonable expectations, but.. under what conditions are you finding sub-par performance?

thanks emeric.Under mixing I've had the odd error and even recording,I am only recording acoustic guitar Just me playing one to four guitars in each song buy the time I've finished. I have no trouble when using cool edit but I like logic it looks ,feels, and mixes better I reckon. Next time I do some recording I'll take note of exactly when and where my problems arise
