I'm about to ouder the UAD-1 Flexipack. This is like the Project Pak except you get $500 to spend on additional plugins.

Does anyone know how the additional plugins are delivered, ie do they come in the box and I purchase an unlock code for the ones I want, or do I have to download theadditional plugins?

You have to autorize them online. At least, that's how I authorized my additional plugins. You are authorizing plugins that already exist on the card, and as best I recall, you get an authorization code.

Ahhh.Of course. Thanks alot man, I keep thinking of s/w plugins.

So the card comes with everything hard wired? How do they get on when a new plugin comes along? Presumably there's some kind of firmware upgrade that needs to be downloaded?

When you register the Flexi Pak you have a $500 credit at the Uaudio store, where you purchase authorizations.

The new plugs are released in software updates, not firmware upgrades, so there is no danger of toasting your card. The card just serves as a CPU to run the plugs, it doesn't store the plug code on the card.

Think of it like those Dongle protections where you need a key in a USB slot to authorize the plugin, except here, the Dongle actually helps performance instead of hurting it.

Thanks ms. So (excuse my thickness here, this is all new) when the card is delivered, are the plugins already 'loaded' on the card, or is there a CD that I install the plugs from as I would normally for VST plugs in my daw?

There's an install CD.

When you install the latest software, you are installing all of the available plug-ins. The plugs that are not authorized by the UAD-1 bundle that you purchased will allow a 14-day demo. After the demo period, they won't work any longer, unless you buy them. When you purchase a plugin, UA gives you a registry file (at least for windows) that you load into your computers registry and the plugin you purchased is unlocked. It's all pretty easy and straight-forward.

Congratulations on your decision to purchase a UAD-1. You won't be disappointed. :D

Hey thanks Raw.

I'm wondering now if I decide to sell the card in a couple of years, would I be able to transfer the plugs to the new owner? I guess I'd have to get this registry file to them somehow

My understanding is that the authorization codes are unique to your card, and thus, if you install those authorizations on a computer with YOUR card, it will work.

So, yes, the add-on plugins will transfer to new owners.

That is the beauty of the way they did things.

OK this looks like it's gonna be cool. Cheers Ford Van

UAudio's policy on transfers is if you sell your card, or one of your card, you have to notify them of the sale and agreed to transfer ALL or NONE or your authorizations. Therefore if you have two cards, and you decide to sell one, you can't transfer only some of your authorizations.

If you don't notify UA of the transfer at all, I am not sure if your transferred authorization file would work on their PC. I think it probably would, but if they decided to buy another plug, there might be trouble. Anyway I don't know why you would refuse to notify UA in the first place; if you did, the buyer would treat your card like a Project Pack and you'd get much less for it.

If it's not too late buy the Ultra pak or the Studio pak!

I have the studio pak and would've bought the uUltr had they offered it at the time. :(

You'll be hard pressed to find any detractors of the UAD-1 card. :D

Heh, probably is too late now, already ordered it.

In any case I'll end up with something close to the Studio Pak. I'm planning to get the 1176, LA2A, Pultec Pro, and either the Dreamverb or Plate140

Plate 140. Not even close. But enjoy the demos while you have them!

I'm interested in the Plate verb but because I only have one card I rarely even use the Dreamverb.
IMHO the best UAD-1 stuff is the compressors and EQ's,if I'm going to run up against the wall on processing power I'll use a different plug for verb. The reverbs and Nigel take the most resources, after that probably the pultec pro.

I struggle with the idea of buying another card all the time. :(

You'll be surprised how good the channel strip plugs are.

That's something else I was wondering about.

Is it possible to buy just the card on its own, or do you have to pay for another Project Pak?

Nope, can't buy the card on it's own. Project Pak is the cheapest way to get a card.

The really good verbs are on the TC Powercore card. I love it's ClassicVerb and MegaVerb, but UAD has the better compressors.
