It was so old, that the site emailed me that he asked the question and I had to renew my password!
I thought...I don't remember saying these things? Oh well.
I think an old U87 would be cool to have, because of the sound.
I have a Rode K2, CAD E200, R84 AEA RIbbon, 2 Rode Nt5's, Studio Pro C1,
and 6 or 7 of the bread and butter Shure and EV mics.
All for the price of about two U87's, but I still want one one day....
What guy/gal wouldn't .

The ribbon is beautiful. especially on Vocals through the LA610.
It is very natural, and suits my vocal. It took me a while to get used though, especially when you can get so many sounds out of it depending on what side and what angle you sing into it. Also, a distance form a guitar amp, (about 5 feet) makes my solid state sound like a vintage tube unit. In the mix of different mics it makes a welcome change, and an individual presence.

I have used one in a studio, on vocals, but not in my studio....It was an early 70's model. I have been told that the newer units sound more like the TLM units, brighter and not as smooth. I have used the TLM103 unit and wasn't happy with it then, that doesn't mean it isn't a good mic, it was what ever I was recording at the time that made my descision. I bet it would be a great acoustic guitar mic, because it was open and top end sounding, and they are all good build quality.

Well, about 10 out of 10 studio engineers that I have talked to think the stock U87 is a big ol' dud of a mic! I can think of about 10 LD's that are much cheaper that I would rather own than a stock U87.
But, if you can have it mod'ed, well, THEN they become one of THE mics to have! But, the mod is almost as much as the mic is. Figure about $4000-5000 for a mod'ed U87.
We have a pair at the studio that are circa 1970 or so. They almost NEVER get used. Every once in a while, on a problematic singer, it works better than the other LD's, but, it isn't like it saved the day either! It just didn't suck as bad as the others on that singer. LOL
It actually works ok on an old time type of country singer, where you want a sort of old not quite hi-fi type of vocal sound. Usually males.
At the $2400 price tag, you can score a PAIR of MANY models of other mics that you will like MUCH better!
If you have used a stock U87 much, your mileage WON'T vary!
