I need one good mic for vocals and acoustic guitar recording. Should I spend the jing on a U87 or save some $'s on an alternative? If you'd save the $'s, what mic do you suggest?

no..I would try out a Blue (blueberry, mouse, or dragonfly) Mic or Soundelux U195 first. IMO the U-87 is such a hit/miss mic.

What's so cheap about the Cad Mike? I believe you can get better sound quality especially for vocals than on the Shure's which are great for recording instruments.

As an alternate thought to the U87 I would look at CADs

They are not cheap in fact they are good quality.
Hell get more mics for all purposes. Unless your running Studio and clientle, that's what I would do.
For the price of a U87 you can get a large diaphram, 2 small dia for stereo and a good pre amp channel with EQ. At least that's what I would do. Check out the NT3 Rodes...great.
Of course there is also a thousand large Diaphram units out there now.My opinion.

Yeah, I'd save the money, but.......I dont have the rest of the quality gear necessary to justify owning a U87.

Do you? If so, then maybe it's worth it. But even if I DID have the rest of the gear to match up to the U87, I still dont think I would buy that particular mic. Maybe if I won the Powerball and it was a true vintage U87, maybe..... But there are soooo many other great mics out there for a lot less money, and will you actually be able to hear the difference when all the work is done and youa re playing the cd back on a stereo at the beach house???

I'd get two C414's, one RE20, and one MD421 before I buy one U87.

Do you have any mics currently? Will you be recording male vocals, female vocals, or both?

I use both the Soundelux U195 and TLM 103 quite a bit, with a preference toward the TLM 103. Both are similar in price range and great choices. They would be my choices over the U87.

Do you have a nice pre and a nice vocal booth? If not, then no high end mic will sound it's best without those.
