What are the characteristics of these two microphones?
What popular (older?) recordings best represent they're recording characteristics?

I would like it basically for this purpose..
To place it in the middle of a room..sit with guitar(acoustic or electric) and sing...and for it to pick up the acoustics of the room.
A mic that will not make me sound "worse".That will record space & airiness.
Occationally also to use as a single source to record loud rock group.

Recording of voice & sound of room is the main thing.

I used an EV635A for this in past a few times but did not like it at all..possibly cause it was recorded on to a horrible Marantz cassette unit.
I am pretty out of date here..but was considering a 414XLS or used U87..Thanks for your help.

I would certainly add the Gefell UMT 70S to the list.

It uses the original legendary M7 capsule designed by Georg Neumann and is a great mic. (and, surprisingly, about one-third cheaper than the U87).

If you want the U87 sound, then only a U87 would do - but the UMT 70S would certainly be my second choice.
