I listen to just about everything, though I don't actively listen to rap, hip hop, or Top 40 pop.
What's been growing on my mind recently is that I only record one or 2 styles of music. Seems a little imbalanced. I record folk and rock/pop- and dabble in electronica a little. I'd happily record anyone doing just about any style of music (as long as they can communicate clearly about what they want and/or have a similar CD that they want to sound like), but I only write in few genres.
Oh, well. I guess one can't do everything.

My primary source of music to listen to these days is that of the home recorded material. I don't care for the music being mass produced commercially.
The musicans who record their own music at home is a literal fountian of untapped resources.
I'm new to recording and have really only done one song, I'd have to say folk/counry. I guess that's what it is.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of bluegrass, and prefer acoustic-based music in general. I write and record Americana, Blues & Bluegrass and demo that material, but I'm a non-performing writer. Like Badgas, a lot of what I listen to is home recorded or indie label product.

I have not turned the radio on for probably 15 years. I listen mainly to Punk Rock and some older metal stuff. I like music with lots of energy. That said, I have a few pleasures from outside of this genre. I really like Phil Collins and I am a huge Police fan, but most of my non punk rock influences are one artist or two from a genre. I mainly record myself, and I write punk rock songs. I also occasionally record a former student that lives in my town (I am a schoolteacher) that plays acoustic country songs. It is a nice change of pace for me.

Im a real big fan of the swedish Metal scene right now. I love In Flames, Meshugga , Soilwork, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Andromeda, Spiral Architect, plenty of others. I also am real big on Tool, Stone temple pilots, Alice in Chains, Pantera. Pretty much anything that is rock.
I mainly write hard rock songs, I try and blend alot of the heaviness from my metal influences with the melody and dynamics of the standard rock bands i listen to.

Ska Punk mainly, but sometimes kinda indie stuff influenced by guys like Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac and the Police.

Classic Rock and Hip Hop were my first loves, then as I grew more mature, I realized life isn't all about sex drugs and Rock and Roll, so I got into playing,dancing,and just recently producing Dance(House,Trance,Breaks,DNB) music, oh wait.... isn't that about sex,drugs, and rock 'n' roll? Either way I still bump everything from Steely Dan to Rakim.

I'm sort of all over the place. Depends on what happens when I pick up my guitar after getting home from work.
I've sort of broken down my stuff into a bunch of imaginary different bands and group songs according to which project I think they fit. Apologizing in advance if none of this makes sense, but FWIW:
The Lemon Cabal - sounds like sort of a cross between Badfinger and the Elephant 6 bands meets Guided By Voices
Resident Dark Horse - kind of like Rainer Maria meets Fugazi meets Slint.
The Bragging Robyns - like what would happen if Robyn Hitchock and Billy Bragg teamed up?
Tom Gabriel - what I call the "90's singer/songwriter sound" (how's that for overgeneralization <g>). Sort of Todd Thibaud, Steve Wynn and Freedy Johnston with the occassional echo of James Taylor and Graham Parker.
The Snits - Take pop punk and dump a big load of Black Flag all over it.
Pop Bidley's Famous - basically me trying to sound like Hendrix
Roger Collins and the Distrubance - goth blues?
Winter - sort of slowcore, Low meets Cat Power
Lazy Suns - this one's hard to pin down. American Music Club meets...I don't know.
My problem is that I'm incredibly undisciplined when it comes to pushing anything beyond a quick sketch. I've had my digital recorder for about 5 months now and there isn't a single song that's "finished" to the point I'd let anyone but my girlfriend listen to on the commute in to work. I guess at this point I get more enjoyment out of just the act of creating than creating something to listen to.
Which probably means I'll never amount to anything much musically. Which is okay. I like the freedom to not have to care.
Then again, if I found the right group of people...I don't know (anyone reading this from Center City Philly?).
The weird thing is I don't record stuff that sounds like my personal "Pantheon" - artists I just absolutely worship like Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Nick Cave, Stephin Merrit... or at least consciously sounds like it.
I guess...oh man, I just burned dinner.

I listen to most stuff....except country, disco, most rap...
My favorite thing to play is blues. I can play a 12 bar blues jam for days without getting bored...its Gods music.

Lately I've been getting my music fix from the internet. I love all kinds of music but the ones I like the least are Country and Rap. I've actually been listening to other reccers more than anything else. i actually have a new dedicated folder for all the songs I D/L from this site.

It's not until Badgas said how he mainly listens to NowhereRadio etc that I realised it may just be 'OK' to do that. I mean one day down the not so distant future, producing and disseminating music will be ever more accessible to the average Joe - new standards are being set for the home recorder by artists at Nowhere Radio etc. I'm a big fan of the amazing 'What a Difference a Day Makes'.
There will always be room for the commercially marketable pop face for the labels to raise and sell.
What really sent it home for me was how the latest solo effort of Lindsey Buckingham, 'Gift of Screws', was rejected by Warner as too uncommercial (it is very, very artistic...and very, very good). So the whole complement of songs magically appeared online as mp3s. Whether as a deliberate action by Lindsey or not, the message is clear. If the know-alls at the top can reject music of that calibre and passion, then WHAT THE HELL DO WE NEED THEM FOR. In cases of musicians who are perhaps not recording for a living, but for whom home/rec is their meaningful passion, the middleman of the five or so label giants can get shafted for all I, the end consumer, care.

I record ussually my acoustic songs (acoustic guitar and vocals), and my rock band.
I ussually don't listen much to the radio because when I do they songs on the radio influence me in my writing to much.

What?....No Hip Hop?
As many of you may well know and understand, music is nothing more than the melodic interpretation of the human experience. Art, fashion, music, and other forms of expression may change with time but the human experience is the same. Human experience meaning the day to day struggles of the average person and his struggle to survive and/or maintain some form of stability. Hip Hop is just another form of expressing these struggles.
Many of you, either because of preconcieved notions you may have of the performers in this perticular genre or your inability to relate, have a warped vision what this music is about.
Sure there are those less enlightened individuals whose lyrics only depict the darker side of the human experience(ei: sex, violence, and drug use), but this is mostly due to the fact that such topics breed contraversy, and of course contraversy=sales.
Yet there are those more contientious of their lyrical content(and I don't mean in a Will Smith "I don't have to use swear words" sort of way).
I post this message, not in an attempt to sway your music taste, but only to eliminate some of the bias' you may have.
In other words....they don't all talk about hoes, jewlry, and drugs...some of them are actually serious, articulate, lyrical masterminds with an uncompromising sense of who they are, who they want to reach, and what they are in the industry to do.
P.S. I listen to any form or music that is real, that means no pop music where all the bands and soloist try so hard to be like each other that you can barely tell them apart both musically and physically.
