Not bad Dave. I always loved The Firebird Suite. It brings back fond memories of Yes concerts. You'd hear it come up on the mains and you knew the band was starting. :D For most of this to be keys, it's pretty convincing.

Very well done. It is a nice change of music to what we usually hear here.

What gear do you use to record?

Thanks for checkin it out. I am pretty happy with the mastering, he did a good job.

Infernal Danse and Aquarium

I just got these back today. Would like to hear any comments you may have.
I just happen to have the original mp3's from your soundclick page ;) . I listened to both (mastered and unmastered) and must say that this is one great mastering job!

Infernal Danse

The most significant difference I hear is the highs. They are much smoother on the mastered track. Not as brittle on the listener. It reduces some tension for the listener - especially at higher volumes.

Speaking of higher volumes, the mastered track is way below the levels I was expecting. I opened them up in Sound Forge Studio (my little 2-track program). The mastered track was never much higher than -2.2 on the meters. In this day and age of cranking the track up to a gazillion when mastering, I found that to be very refreshing. I could crank the volume on my player and even full out it was always clean and clear.

Very smooth overall sound also. That Konrad Strauss must have some real serious equipment and great ears. He's done a great job.

The playing/arranging is excellent. The original mix was also excellent - it shows in the final mastered version.

I've only had a chance to download and listen to the Infernal Danse - I'll listen to Aquarium (personal favorite) a little later tonight......

;) ;) :D :D

One track peaks at -11

I expected much louder too. After hearing the whole disc a few times, I am fine with it and it makes sense. The dynamic range is huge, and the soft songs after loud ones are REALLY soft. The final track should be the loudest and it peaks at -1.5, the other loud tracks around -2.5.

Its quite the conundrum :D , it's a classical hybrid disc, but some of it rocks. The rockin ones come off as pretty loud when you hear the whole thing, and the ones like Aquarium show off the huge dynamic contasts in Classical. Umm, I think... :o Thanks for listening Gerry!

David,
Very convincing samples & synth playing.
How many tracks of violin, au natural & electric not synth, did you average?
The mastering is good. It's nice to know that someone at that end of the production chain retains the sensitivity to treat the work well.
Congratulations.

Thanks Ray.

The Infernal danse has 39 violin tracks and 75 synth or sample tracks.

Aquarium has 22 violins and 22 synths

HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!

Sounds great.
The brass section sounds quite MIDI, but awseome work.

I want to hear the unmstered version! :)
And how much it cost you. :P

I think they sound pretty good man.....very clean, and full of all the dynamics. Very nice man. When's teh cd gonna be ready? :D

Thanks for listening, recording brethren

My original plan was to have this much more "synthy". It wasnt supposed to emulate an orchestra, if I want that I can just go to work :D Most of the CD is a hybrid of synth and real. This track however sounds TOO real, and it wasnt meant to be.

Later today I will put up an A/B demo of another track. It didnt cost ME anything, I got a record deal and the label did this.

When's teh cd gonna be ready?
Sept 12 I think.

Congrats on the Record deal.
Its not a major is it?

My band has just been offered a 3 album deal, so might take that up.

Yeah I know what your saying, most of it does sound real althoug it wasnt your intentions in the first place.
Without the brass I might not have had a clue there was any synth in there.

Its an independent label, small but some good classical artists. Congrats on your offer, are you gonna take it? I have a 3 CD deal too, PM me if you wanna trade notes. :)

David- sounds great! The only thing that didn't sit right with me was the some of the horns on the first track. Too "midi" sounding for my tastes, but that's just me. Everything else is great, and you should be scoring films with that kind of talent. Cheers, Rez

Excellent excellent listens... what can I say, sounds about perfect to my ears. I listened to the undermastered version too, the mastered sounds a bit smoother and more roomy to me. It's good to hear dynamics too, they did a good job IMO

Thanks for the listen fellers. It was my first time, I was a master virgin  :D

I learned a lot, actually I learned a ton doing the whole CD. Some things went good, some not so. The next time I send a master off I will leave MORE NOTES as to what to do. I never talked to the ME nor was I in a position to, he did this on the side very quickly from what I gather.

The main thing I learned was how little mastering changes things. Its a nice polish, but certainly no radical changes. The levels are something I will work on for next time: its hard to get the right volumes in music this dynamic.
