I recently added a DAW setup to my studio. My setup previously consisted of an HD24XR and a Soundtracs Topaz board. I now find myself with the OUTS from the board and the OUTS from my PC based DAW and only one set of inputs for my monitors. I've considered the following:

1) Run both sets of outs through my patchbay and repatch when I switch back and forth between the analog board and the DAW

2) purchase one of those "studio router" devices like Samson makes

3) find some kind of "Y" adapters and send both signals to the monitors

4) ????

I'm sure I can't be the first person to deal with this so I thought I'd turn here for help.

Thanks!

I assume you are talking about speaker monitors rather than displays.

Ever heard of a mixer?

I do #1. I also have the inputs of the mixer on the patchbay half normalled to the outputs of my tape machine, so that when I want to bring the DAW outputs to the mixer I patch them in. you could also send the main daw outputs to an aux on your topaz.

Obviously I've heard of a mixer. That's what a Soundtracs Topaz is... But on occassion when tracking larger groups or doing more complex mixing, I don't necessarily want to use up 2 channels for the DAW.

I do like the idea of using and AUX on the board, though I seldom have the board powered up when I'm working with the PC.

I think so far my fav. idea is FALKEN'S of bringing them in half-normaled. I have a couple cables on order from MF so I'll give that a try straight away.
Thanks all!

use a small line mixer, and route your DAW, computer, and mixing console into it, then feed your amps/monitors off that.

I use a medium to high end Numark DJ mixer actually, and its worked very well. I feed the computer, the front L/R mix from my console (I have surround capability), my CD player, my DVD player, and various other things through it. In fact, when I'm editing video, I often have the FM Radio going as well as the PC, through this mixer simultaniously. Radio, very low in comparison to the audio of the computer, of course. The radio works for background noise in between test plays. Most of my time is spent adjusting timing, not reviewing what I've done anyway.

I dunno,w orks for me.

Hey Thane, What model is that Samson?

The Presonus Central station is a nice little box for what you are looking for. You can even get a remote, plus two channels of D/A.

I use what ever is available. Since I listen to so many sources(video, computer, mixer, cassettes, LP's, 8 track(old cassette style) and many other things, I have a series of patchbays, AND vintage stereo preamps/recievers. The preamp/recievers have source select buttons AND A/B speaker select switchs,. I can quickly bring up what ever I want wherever I want, including headphones. I built a multiple headphone select/source switching modules on each end of the console with each module having 2 headphone outs/source selects and a Hi Z input with imput select switchs., These route the hi z signal to either direct boxes to feed the mixer, or to a patchbay normalled to FX unit inputs. Works great.
