Two Sonar Installs?

I have two different applications in which I use Sonar 3. The first is just recording myself and the second is recording a church band live. For myself I would like to use my Audiophile 2496 because it is my best card and the 2 track input is fine. But for the church band, I need to use the KX asio drivers of my Audigy 2 so I can get 6 channel recording. If installed Sonar on two different hard drivers, could I just set one up for each application?

I hope I'm on the right track with this, however my PC at home is a dual boot.. both booting in XP. One is optimised for Audio, the other has no optimisation at all. I use the same sound card in both installations and it both situations I have my Sound Blaster card disabled (it is coming out tonight... I need more ventilation throught the box). I hope that kind of answers your questions, yes you can.

Do you mean 6 channel recording using only the Audigy 2 (does the Audigy 2 really has 6 inputs) ?

I'm asking because I should let you know that you won't be able to use both the Audiophile and Audigy 2 and get synced recordings. The Audiophile and Audigy 2 will (over time) drift apart because they have different clocks.

I know that the two will drift over time. I don't use them at the same time. But I did get them to stay insync for about 8 minutes when I tried just for the fun of it.

Without the kx drivers, you have to choose which input on the audigy 2 platinum you want to be used as the recording source through the windows control panel. So you have to choose between line in 1, line in 2, and auxillary (rca). But with kx, all of those stereo inputs are enabled for recording.

I have only used these kx drivers for about a month and they are pretty smokin'. Latency drops to floor and I have no trouble input monitoring a number of tracks at once. I would say it is not quite as good as the Audiophile only because of sound quality (which is so so so minimal and it is really just an eq thing.) But all those who say that the latency of creative cards are bad would be eating their words if they tried these drivers. I definately recommend them to any creative user, it makes the card seem like something totally new.

The major downside of the Creative cards, which you will only see from getting a better card, is the quality (or lack there of) with the A/D converters.

Well, it really depends on what you need to do. Do you only use kXproject with the Audigy 2?

If that's the case, then there's no need for dual boot. Here's what I would do:
Start with Sonar with Audiohpile. Go to the Sonar-directory and make a copy of the "aud.ini"-file. Rename it to something like aud-audiophile.ini. Do the same thing for the Audigy. Before you start Sonar, make a copy of the aud.ini-file using the same card as you intend to use.

I don't know if it works, but it's worth a shot...

If it is a PC, just enable/disable the soundcard not used at the moment in the "Hardware Profiles" box. Then set the card up in Sonar each time you switch. I do it all the time.

Do it in Sonar.

Options - Audio - Drivers tab

enable or disable by highlighting the cards ( drivers ) you want to be active. Sonar will tell you to restart before the changes will take affect.

But I want to use the Audigy in ASIO and the Audiophile in WDM. But everytime I select asio, sonar chooses to use the asio drivers for the Audiophile instead of the audigy. It is driving me nuts.

Isn't there a way to get rid of ASIO drivers for the Audigy and WDM drivers for the Audiophile? Totally wipe em off your system, under XP's Control Panel / System / Device Manager, making sure you have assigned Audigy as ASIO and the Audiophile as WDM by removing the unwanted the driver files? You may have to do some research to figure out which files cover which driver type.

I would think if there were no other choices for driver assignments, you'd be Okay. Good Luck.

You have to set up the card/drivers you are using (at the time) in the "hardware profiles' in XP. Then you save the profiles and only check one card per profile. There is a checkbox that asks if you want the selection to exist in all profiles, or just the profile you are using at the moment. Then, when you select the profile you want (in XP) you set the card up in Sonar. It is a little work, but once you get used to it, it is fast. I know of no other way to easily do this.
