Two SM57s (one at 45º angle) On A Guitar Amp Method? (and other two mic methods...)

According to Bruce Miller the original idea with that mic placement was to run both mics into a single channel/preamp. I've never tried it as I like a dynamic on the cab and a room mic for my guitar tone.

I use this method for all of my recording. But, I generally use two different mics, but not always. Right now I'm using a 57 and e609S. Each mic goes to it's own track and I mix them to mono during mix.

Check my sig for quite a few examples. For each clip I try to document the Amp-Spkr-Mics used.

I generally stay with these mics
57
57 no xfmr
e609S
421
i5

yeah, i have a few other mics but have not gotten a chance to try them out in this fashion. i have a EV 635a, and a e906...either of those might work will as a substitute for one of the 57s i suppose.

I also sometimes throw a mic BEHIND the the cab, do get some real low-down dirty stuff (depends on the type of music of course).

however, remember to phase reverse if you do this, as the air will be moving in the opposite directions.

yeah, phase reversed mic behind the amp...cool idea.

is there is possibility of audible phase problems with the 45º angle method?

yes, anytime two mics are used phase can become an issue. make sure the capsules are the same distance. but phase can be used to your advantage also. if you track the mics to seperate tracks, you can slide one later.

yeah, the tracks will be recorded to seperate tracks...so i guess i could always fix the problem if it occurs.

thanks!

if you position the capsules right beside each other, phase should not be a problem.

also, another thing to play with is distance. moving very close will make a big difference. there's a point at which the highs smooth out the closer you get.
