Pretty cool Tom.Did you ever see Chet Atkins Play 2 songs at the same time? One on the lower strings and another on the high strings.....wild stuff.

You did a good job of piecing these 2 parts together.

Sami - Thanks
Kramer - Thanks also.It was two takes plus two redos of a measure each to cover up a couple of clams, parts blended with volume evolutions.

geat guitar tone.........well played....very well played.......nice job

I'd love to see a fingerstyle arrangement of this. I'm currently practicing something similar...it's a Lawrence Juber arrengement called Away in Two Mangers... it combines both version of Away in a Manger. Anywho, nice arrangement and nice tone.

pretty interesting how the two combined. I gotta think that listening to other JS Bach...this stuff is about half speed. Or is this the "correct" speed for these dittys?

Nice to hear something a tad different in here. I still do hear a couple of minor "clams" in there in notes "half hit".

thanks for the post.

I can't hear the vocals very well.

Hey, this is pretty cool man. Just curious- did u use a metronome?

very warm tone here....almost jazz like more than classical, IMO. Also, did you memorize all that or play from the sheet? either way, nicely done. Made me want to pour some wine.

Thanks for listening guys.
powderfinger - I tried it first on acoustic guitar and then switched to the Les Paul before I was happy with the tone.
JR#97 - Originally I did it fingerpicking, both lines simultaniously. But I decided to separate the lines so I could pan them.
mixmkr - The tempo is "moderato",so your guess is good as mine. This is a piano piece,of course, and I'm not even sure its in this key.
SluiCe - I first put down some midi drums (with a swing feel!) and later muted them.I was reading a transcription by Joseph Castle from a Mel Bay book.

nice tone, nice playing. might I ask how the guitar was recorded? amp or modeler?

Hi W.I.S.C.
Thanks for the kind words.Signal chain is Les Paul on neck pickup into j-station amp modeller on blackface twin clean setting into c-port via S/PDIF into an Anthlon 1700+ running w98se.Tracking was done with nuendo at 24 bit/44.1K and editing was with CEP.A little waves C1 and Freeverb Too was sprinkled in for "sheen".I usually EQ the heck out of guitar to make it jigsaw into the mix but this time there were no competing instruments so it is pretty straight-forward.Untill I get an f-hole jazz box,the LP has the warmest tone of my available choices.

Nice playing Tom!
I dig the old masters stuff, sounds really cool.

Good recording,enjoyed it very much,thanks.

Pete

Just a question in between, don't have high speed access except for at work where I cannot listen... Which invention is it?

Hi Roel
That is a good question. The sheet music in the guitar book was simply titled "two part invention".I think the arranger changed the original key to make guitar fingerings workable. This version is in C in the book. The only one I know individually is the invention in F from my brief piano lessons in college.

I'll download it here anyways... What are they gonna do, fire me? :D

I'll tell ya which one it is.

Hmmm. Just noticed that I only have the right channel here. :D They moved the radio for cleaning a while ago.

It's the first 2-part invention in C.

I didn't listen to it completely, as listening to only one part (and a vague notion of second part) is not that satisfying. I think it could do with some more dynamics, play sentences, find out which part has 'the lead' where, and have it come out. Also have some dynamics in the big sense, build up, down again, up again...

Another common thing to do in classical music is play with the timing. Accelerate or slow down a little, things like that. Now, bach doesn't really ask for it, it IS barok, and the instruments back then were not all that dynamic. But we don't live in 1750 anymore, right?

Playing the 2 or 3 parts at the same time is VERY good to get a good insight in music, especially to devellop multi-part thinking, I mean, you gotta get your mind over the lead-chords thing. ALL parts have equal importance, and they all have to be heard... Very hard to build up on sentence while another one is building down. I love playing Bach on my piano (I'm playing some 3part inventions) just for the complexity. It's kindof mental relaxation, you force your mind completely to that mathematical-inspired music and forget about everything else. Just don't try to play it too fast cause that causes headaches.

Thanks Roel
Let me know what you think of the phrasing after you get a chance to hear the whole thing.

Gotta admit, I'm used to hearing it a bit skippier but it sounds pretty cool like this.

Panning gives an interesting effect to it also. There are two melodies here and you can really spend the rest of your life trying to play it such that each melody has it's own place and character or.....you can just play it twice and pan it! Great idea.

Is there any way to play the decorative elements (mordants and trills) on a guitar? I suppose you could hammer those?

erichenryus - Mordant and the Trills, sounds like a good band name!
